The Super Cup takes place tonight between Champions League winners Real Madrid and Europa League victors Sevilla in Trondheim, Norway. Both sides are making their fifth appearance in this fixture and it’s also the fourth Super Cup between two Spanish clubs, following on from the 2006, 2014 and 2015 editions.

Real Madrid have had mixed success in this tournament. They lost their first two finals in 1998 and 2000, against Chelsea and Galatasaray respectively, but their two more recent ties against Feyenoord and tonight’s opponents Sevilla have resulted in victories.

Sevilla’s fortunes have also been mixed in this competition, and they’ve won just one of their four ties. The win came in 2006 against Barcelona, but since then they’ve lost against AC Milan, Real Madrid and the Catalan Giants in 2015.

Prior to tonight, the sides have met 177 times, with Real Madrid recording 94 wins to Sevilla’s 54. There have been 29 draws.

One thing to take into account is Barcelona’s 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend. Although neither side features in the Super Cup, it showed that the Spanish clubs are further behind in terms of their pre-season and both managers could see this as another step in their preparations for the new season.

Real Madrid are the favourites to win at 20/23, whilst Sevilla are outsiders at 3/1.
