The oldest international football fixture adds another chapter tonight, when Scotland travel south to Wembley to take on England. The build-up to the game has been dominated by discussion regarding the precarious nature of the two managers.

Gareth Southgate is England’s interim manager and has tonight’s game and the one against Spain next week to claim the job on a full-time basis, whereas Gordon Strachan is fighting to stay as Scotland manager and anything less than a win tonight could be the end of his tenure in charge.

England top Group F, with 7 points from their three games so far, whilst Scotland sit in fourth place, with four points from their opening three matches.

Team News

Gareth Southgate has confirmed that there are no injury doubts over his England squad and that Wayne Rooney will start as captain. Harry Kane returned from 7 weeks out with an ankle injury in the North London derby last weekend and could be in line for a start.

Scotland have one fitness doubt in Steven Fletcher, who’s suffering from a knee injury. Scott Brown suffered a dead leg last weekend, but is likely to be passed fit.

Stats

  • This will be the third time that these two sides have met this century. England won the previous two; 3-2 in August 2013 and 3-1 in November 2014.
  • Wayne Rooney scored twice in his last game against Scotland.
  • England have kept three clean sheets in a row.
  • Scotland have failed to score in three of their last four away international matches.
