The Championship’s 10 Best Players so far 2016-17

From a player who’s been sent off three times to a player who’s been compared to Kenny Dalglish, we’ve taken a look at the best players from the Championship so far this season.

Tammy Abraham-Bristol City

The Chelsea loanee has been the in-form Championship player this season, with 12 goals in 20 games. He’s the main reason for Bristol City’s surprisingly good start and if he carries on this form for the whole season, then he’ll be pushing for a Chelsea first team place next year.

Scott Hogan-Brentford

Jamie Vardy’s former teammate has made an impressive return to form since suffering a second cruciate ligament in April 2015. He scored seven goals in the final four games of last season and has picked up where he left off this term. He’s scored eight times for a side who sit just four points outside the playoff spots.

Conor Hourihane-Barnsley

The Irish midfielder was a key player in Barnsley’s remarkable season last year, which saw them go from the bottom of League One to promotion via the playoffs. The 25-year old has been given the captain’s armband at Oakwell and with his contract up at the end of the year; he won’t be short of admirers from elsewhere.

Anthony Knockaert-Brighton and Hove Albion

Knockaert was a key player in Brighton’s promotion push last season and he’s proving his worth again this year. He can be inconsistent, but he’s possibly the most naturally gifted player in the Championship. The Seagulls are sat in second place in the league and his form will be key to them gaining promotion this year.

Olamide Shodipo-QPR

QPR is a club in constant turmoil, but the fans have been introduced to a highly promising home grown youngster. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has left Loftus Road, but his decision to not send Olamide Shodipo on loan will pay dividends. The Dutch great said that he has raw potential, but he’s not yet the finished product.

Jonjo Shelvey-Newcastle

Jonjo Shelvey has flattered to deceive for a number of years, but he’s been the outstanding player in Newcastle’s climb to the top of the table. He’s thrived under Rafa Benitez’ management and has become the division’s most important playmaker. Newcastle fans will hope that his charge for racially abusive language is dropped; otherwise he could be facing a lengthy ban.

Hildeberto Pereira-Nottingham Forest

The on-loan right back from Benfica has had an interesting start to life in the Championship to say the least. He’s capable of the magnificent, like his assist for a goal against Aston Villa, which he later received a second yellow card for excessive celebrating, and his match winning goal against Birmingham City. However, he’s been sent off three times in his last seven games.

Jacob Murphy-Norwich

Along with his identical twin Josh, Jacob has courted the attention of Liverpool with his performances so far this season. He’s aged just 21 and is inconsistent, but he’s one of the most dangerous wingers in the division when he’s on form and he’s tipped for greater things.

Aaron Mooy-Huddersfield

Huddersfield have been the surprise of the Championship season so far and Aaron Mooy has been their finest performer. The Australian midfielder, on loan from Manchester City, has drawn comparisons with greats of the past and if he keeps playing well, then Huddersfield could maintain their current third place position in the table.

Pontus Jansson-Leeds

The Swedish centre back has played a big role in making sure that Leeds are in the playoff places for the first time since December 2013. The Elland Road faithful have taken the on loan defender to their hearts and will no doubt love him even more, now that he’s declared that he wants to sign a permanent deal at the club.
