Italy v Austria Preview

The opening day of the knockout stages continues on Saturday with Italy and Austria travelling to London for their last 16 tie.

Bookies seem to be unnecessarily harsh on the underdogs here, perhaps more so due to the fine form of the Italians as opposed to anything else.

However, we wouldn’t recommend writing off the Austrians, who had to beat the Ukraine and North Macedonia to get through the group stages, and looked good in spells while losing to the Netherlands.

Italy have emerged as one of the favourites for the tournament with their beautiful passages of play in wins over Turkey, Switzerland and Wales, and will need to continue that form on Saturday to book a quarter-final spot.

Italy v Austria Betting Odds

Italy are almost unbackable favourites for this game, while Austria are some of the widest underdogs in the whole last 16 stage.

Remember that this is a knockout game, so if it goes to extra-time and/or penalties and the team you have backed to win goes through, you have still lost the bet. You must bet on the ‘to qualify’ market to back a team to go through via any method.

The Italians are 4/9 for victory (1/6 to qualify), with the draw a 16/5 shot and Austria are essentially being given no chance at all with a price of 7/1 (17/4 to qualify).

Italy v Austria Betting Tips

Odds are correct at the time of publication and are subject to change.

Austria to qualify17/4

We don’t necessarily think that this is the most likely outcome, but knockout football is still knockout football and we just don’t think at this level any game is really this big of a mismatch. Austria were bossed by the Netherlands, but they did well to beat the Ukraine on opening day. If they can properly maintain their defensive structure then it’s very possible they manage to score the upset.

Italy to win by two goals59/20

If you insist on betting on Italy, there is good value in the winning margin market. 2-0 or 3-1 would get you these 59/20 odds which look good to us. To win by three goals is also worth a look at 23/4, while if you think Austria push them a bit and only lose by one, that’s 17/10.

Italy to score in both halves17/10

Given the prices for the rest of this game, this seems like a pretty good deal. It’s not going to make you rich, but if Italy were to win by two or three goals the likelihood that they’d come in both halves is pretty high. Looks like a worthwhile bet to us, perhaps as part of a double with some of the Wales v Denmark markets earlier in the day.
