European Football Preview

The league seasons of the top teams in Europe begin this weekend with La Liga and the Bundesliga both kicking off on Friday or Saturday, while Ligue 1 continues.

In La Liga, the whole league will be reeling from the loss of Lionel Messi as the Argentinian star left Barcelona for PSG earlier this month. The legendary attacker scored almost 500 career goals for the club, and will be a huge loss not only to Barca, but the whole league. They’ll kick-start their season against Real Sociedad on Sunday evening after champions Atletico Madrid play Celta Vigo away earlier in the day and Real Madrid travel to Alaves on Saturday.

Over in Ligue 1, Lionel Messi will likely hold off on making his debut, but he will be in Paris to be presented to fans on the pitch at the Parc des Princes. They’re absurd favourites to win the league title this year, and their closest challengers Lyon and Lille both didn’t start in the ideal way last weekend, so they’ll be looking for big results.

In Germany, defending champions Bayern Munich will get us underway on Friday night with a trip to Monchengladbach, while other top sides like Wolfsburg and Red Bull Leipzig don’t kick off until later in the weekend. Wolfsburg will face VfL Bochum at home on Saturday, while Leipzig travel to play Mainz on Sunday on an exciting opening weekend of actions.

Football doesn’t begin in Italy until next weekend, but expect fireworks on the opening weekend, particularly when AC Milan face Sampdoria.

Barcelona v Real Sociedad Betting Odds

Can Barcelona survive without Lionel Messi? Real Madrid have had to answer similar questions after their loss of Ronaldo in recent years, but they have struggled at times, and it is expected that Barca will see some tough times as well. On Sunday, they’re 20/27 favourites to beat Sociedad, who are 10/3 to get a big win. The draw is priced at 21/10, and it isn’t the worst bet in the world given the teething process we expect from Barca.

Monchengladbach vs Bayern Munich Betting Odds

The prices on this match are absolutely massive, and could provide some great value if you like underdogs. The hosts are 19/5 for a win while a draw is 17/5, but either of these results are definitely possible. Even the heavily favoured Bayern win at 5/9 could work brilliantly on an acca with some wider odds matches, so there is certainly value to be found in this game if you look in the right places.

Lille v Nice Betting Odds

At 20/23, Lille are strong favourites to beat Nice in their second game of the season, and the Ligue 1 champions will need to do that if they plan on retaining their title. A draw, the same result as they got last week, is 47/20 and a price we really like while the away win is 10/3.
