Chelsea vs Liverpool Football Preview

Chelsea go into this weekend’s clash off the back of six consecutive wins in all competitions, including a 2-1 extra time win over Palmeiras to secure the Club World Cup and a comfortable 2-0 victory in the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie against Lille.

Their opponents Liverpool also find themselves in a rich vein of form, having closed the gap on league leaders City and put one foot in the next round of the Champions league after a 2-0 win over Inter at the San Siro.

Although there is a substantial gap between these two in the league standings, there hasn’t been anything to separate them in either league meeting this season. Thomas Tuchel’s side were able to hang on for a point at Anfield in August after going down to 10 men at the end of the first-half. It was a much more open affair when they met in January, as Chelsea cancelled out an early two goal deficit to earn another point.

Whilst it seems Liverpool will be at full strength for this tie, Tuchel will still be without two players that were pivotal in the Blues’ early season success. They have been able to manage without Reece James and Ben Chilwell, but there is no doubt Chelsea are a stronger side with their wing-backs included.

Cesar Azpilicueta will rarely let you down defensively, but his dynamism is incomparable to James. Marcos Alonso is a solid attacking outlet, but his all-round game is nowhere near as defined as that of Chilwell. When you also factor in the underwhelming return to London for Romelu Lukaku, Tuchel will certainly be having headaches with his selection.

Whilst it is unclear whether Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota will be available for selection, Klopp’s recent comments suggest there is a good chance they will be. Even if just one of them are fit, Liverpool will fancy their chances of beating Chelsea for the first time since 2020.

Our NetBet win probability counter has given Klopp’s side a small edge at 40% chance of victory. Despite their ability to get over the line in big games, Tuchel’s Chelsea are slight underdogs with a 30% chance of winning, with a draw in 90 minutes seen as equally likely.

Chelsea vs Liverpool Football Odds

With both meetings ending all-square this season, it’s no surprise that isn’t much to separate these two in the odds. Liverpool are the bookies’ favourites at 7/5, with a Chelsea win less likely at 41/20 and a draw in 90 minutes priced at 21/10.

Chelsea vs Liverpool Betting Tips

Both Teams to Score, No Draw – 19/10

Both meetings this season have seen both find the net but ended all-square. We can’t see either failing to get on the scoresheet, and with tension high at Wembley, there’s every chance this could be decided in 90.

Half Time / Full Time: Tie/Liverpool – 9/2

There is never anything to choose between these two at half-time, but Liverpool’s relentless attacking presence is sure to take its toll the later this game goes.

Create YourBet Special: Over 0.5 First-Half Goals, Mo Salah to Score First, Both Teams to Score, Liverpool Win – 26/1

Seven of the last eight games between these two have had a first-half goal, and why wouldn’t it be Mo Salah that provides it? Chelsea will certainly be up for a battle, with plenty of attacking talent of their own, but Liverpool look to have the edge.
