Masters Preview and Betting Odds

The potentially imminent return of Tiger Woods has sent the golfing world into meltdown heading into the first Major of the year. The five-time Masters champion headed to Augusta for some practice rounds ahead of the competition which has served him so well over the decades. The appearance would come some 25 years after he became the youngest ever recipient of the green jacket at just 21 years old in 1997. Could Tiger make a sensational comeback and tie Jack Nicklaus as the most acclaimed Masters golfer of all time? We certainly wouldn’t put it past him – NetBet has Woods at 50/1 to pull off a historic win.

With all the attention on Tiger’s return, Scottie Scheffler will be quietly going about his business ahead of the tournament. His exceptional form this year has seen him leapfrog Jon Rahm as the world number one, with three victories in his last five starts putting the American amongst the favourites to take the crown. The man he overtook in the rankings currently leads the way as the bookies favourite at 9/1, but Rahm’s inconsistent form will be a worry for many of his fans.

There are also doubts over whether reigning champion Hideki Matsuyama will have a chance to defend his title. He became the first man from Japan to win a Major at last year’s Masters, but withdrawal from both the Players Championship and last week’s Valero Texas Open have clouded his involvement with uncertainty. Will Matsuyama have the opportunity to become only the fourth player to win back-to-back Masters Tournaments?

Masters Betting Tips

Dustin Johnson to win – 16/1

Despite missing the cut at last year’s Masters, Johnson tends to play well around Augusta. His victory in 2020 came after four consecutive top 10 finishes, including a T2 a year prior and a T4 in 2016 – he knows how to go low in Georgia. He played well on his way to a tied ninth place finish at the Players Championship last month, with his form appearing to be trending in the right direction ahead of this weekend.

Viktor Hovland E/W – 20/1

2022 is set to be Hovland’s breakthrough year – it already has been to an extent. The Norwegian has registered three top five finishes, a win at the Dubai Desert Classic, and a T9 in a strong field at the Players Championship. The 24-year-old made the cut in all three Majors that he competed in last year, and it’s surely only a matter of time before he claims his first win.

Top 5 Finish: Rory McIlroy – 4/1

It’s difficult to argue with McIlroy’s record at Augusta. Before missing the cut last year, the former world number one had made the weekend in 10 successive Masters, making the top 10 six times, including three top five finishes. The Masters is the only Major trophy not in his cabinet – could it finally be the year he slips on the green jacket?
