England vs Spain Football Preview

Spain were the tournament favourite heading into Euro 2022, but performances in the group stages have seen the tides turn. Three strong England performances – including a record-breaking 8-0 win over Norway – has seen the hosts establish themselves as frontrunners in the odds.

Spain began their campaign well, but were beaten 2-0 by Germany and needed a 90th minute winner to take all three points against Denmark. As a result, they have fallen down the pecking order. There is no doubt this Spanish side possesses world class talent, but it remains to be seen whether they can compete with an England team that are playing some of their best football to date.

The hosts have had the better of this fixture since their first meeting in 2007. In the 10 games since, England have been victorious on five occasions, whilst Spain have managed just two wins. That being said, it is always a close affair when these giants of the women’s game collide – only once has a game been decided by more than one goal.

The Lionesses are currently on a 17-match unbeaten run stretching back over a year, so it comes as no surprise to see them head into the fixture as favourites. Despite Spain’s somewhat faltering form in the group stages, their defeat to Germany was a first in over two years. It would certainly be unwise for Sarina Wiegman to take this match-up lightly.

England win and both to score – 3-1

This will be England’s toughest test yet. They may not have conceded in the group stage, but they haven’t faced a team with Spain’s quality. It’s hard to argue against a victory for the hosts given their momentum, but it certainly won’t be a walk in the park.

Anytime goalscorer: Beth Mead – 23/10

Ellen White began the tournament as favourite to claim the Golden Boot, but it is Beth Mead that has grabbed the headlines. Not only did she become the highest group stage goalscorer in the tournament’s history, but she also became the first player to score in all three group games. If anyone is going to fire the Lionesses into the semi-finals, it’s Beth Mead.

HT/FT: Tie/England – 18/5

This is set to be a slightly nervier affair than we’ve seen prior. It will be evenly contested for long periods, but we expect England to come out on top eventually and secure a place in the next round.
