Manchester United vs Liverpool Football Preview

Two of the most successful clubs in England find themselves in a bit of bother heading into this Monday’s game at Old Trafford. United have endured their worst start to a season in 101 years under new boss Erik ten Hag, losing both of their opening fixtures and suffering an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Brentford.

Things haven’t been quite so bad for Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s side have had to come from behind to rescue a point against Fulham and Crystal Palace, teams you would expect the Reds to dispatch of rather comfortably. For all their struggles thus far, Liverpool boast a very impressive recent record over their rivals and they’ll be confident in claiming their first victory, as well as the bragging rights.

The 4-0 preseason friendly win for United seems a lifetime ago, as does the last time they beat Liverpool in the league. Of their last 12 meetings with Liverpool, the Red Devils have won just once, and they have lost four of the last five. Last campaign was the latest in a long line of seasons to forget for United, with 4-0 and 5-0 drubbings at the hands of Liverpool making things far, far worse.

Ten Hag’s only hope is that Liverpool haven’t exactly come flying out the blocks, and injuries will see the visitors arrive at Old Trafford with a depleted squad. That being said, after the first half showing at the Brentford Community Stadium, there won’t be many queuing up to put their money on the hosts.

Manchester United vs Liverpool Betting Tips

*Odds correct at the time of publication and are subject to change.

Liverpool win to zero – 9/5

This has got to be the most likely outcome, right? It’s how both meetings between these two ended last season, and United haven’t covered themselves in glory in their recent outings. Liverpool may be weakened through injuries and suspension, but at least they have a clear system.

Liverpool win, over 2.5 goals, Mo Salah first goalscorer – 6/1

The last four games between United and Liverpool have had a minimum of four goals. United have been poor defensively; Liverpool have the attack to punish them. It’s as simple as that. Mo Salah helped himself to a hat-trick at Old Trafford last season, and the Egyptian will be raring to go on Monday night.

Tie with goals – 15/4

Maybe, just maybe… Could United nick a point from an unimpressive Liverpool side? There’s a chance. Admittedly a very slim one, but a chance all the same. If they turn up on the night and take the battle to their rivals, anything could happen.
