What is Gaelic Football?

Gaelic Football, commonly known as GAA (the Gaelic Athletic Association) or simply Gaelic, is an Irish team sport, the most popular of the Gaelic games. The game takes place on a rectangular grass pitch having H-shaped goals at both ends. This version of football involves speed, accuracy, and precision.

The game is played using a round leather ball, and unlike traditional football, the players can use both hands and feet to get ahold of and pass the ball. Each team comprises 15 players, and the game is officiated by only one referee.

The game’s main objective is to score by punching or kicking the ball into the opposing team’s goals (earning 3 points) or between two posts found above the goals and over a crossbar 2.5 meters above the ground (1 point).

Players advance the ball up the field via a combination of kicking, carrying, bouncing, hand-passing, and soloing. Two types of scores are possible in the game: goals and points.

A goal is awarded when a player kicks the ball under the crossbar directly into the net, which is indicated by the umpire raising a green-coloured flag. On the other hand, a point is awarded for hand-passing or kicking the football over the crossbar. That is when the umpire raises a white flag. The team with the most points at the end of the match is declared the winner.

The History of Gaelic Football

Gaelic football was initially codified in 1887, even though it has alleged links to older varieties of football in Ireland. A rough-and-tumble form of Gaelic football was commonly found throughout the Medieval ages; corresponding versions were abundant throughout Europe and eventually evolved into forebears of rugby and soccer.

Although references linking to Irish Football were all but non-existent before the 1600s, the initial records of a recognised predecessor to today’s Gaelic football come from a game in County Meath in Ireland in 1670. In this version, kicking and catching the ball using hands were allowed.

The game was introduced in North America in the 1890s, including in the United States and Canada in 1892. The very first clubs appeared in 1896 in England.

How to Bet on Gaelic Football

At NetBet, we aim to offer the best possible odds and various bets. Below are the most popular types of bets for Gaelic Football.

Winning Margin Bet

The winning margin market attracts a lot of attention since it involves a straightforward strategy. Bettors can place bets on a team to win by a decided margin of points, typically within a two-point range. What makes the most sense in such a strategy is to assess the handicap line and go with a winning margin that matches.

Suppose a sportsbook has set the handicap line at -3.5. In that case, you can bet on the favourite to win by 4 points or more.

The odds of this type of bet are often high as it is difficult to predict.

The Draw No Bet

This is a popular bet associated with Gaelic Football. It can help you protect your bankroll when betting on intense matches between two evenly matched teams.

Like with soccer, betting on matches involves three likely outcomes, i.e., home win, away win, or draw.

You can choose to negate one of these options and improve your winning odds using the “Draw No Bet” option. This returns your total stake in cases where you bet on a team to win, and the game ends in a tie.

Accumulator Bet

An accumulator bet remains a practical and likely rewarding option regardless of what team sport you like betting on.

With this bet type, you are required to choose four or more teams to win specific matches, with every option merged into a single wager. Simultaneously, these individual odds are then multiplied to generate a final cumulative price.

You will need each selection to come out good if you aim to create a winning accumulator. In that case, it is recommended to cap your online betting slip to no more than about six teams.

The First Scoring Play Bet

The First Scoring Play bet is another popular bet that involves betting on who is likely to score the first goal. It may not be the first scoring play since points may also be gained by getting the football through the uprights but over the net.

Therefore, you may either bet on the scorer of a game’s first goal or on which team will get the first point and scoring play. Typically, you may access markets for scoring plays, while such bets are linked with raised odds and payouts.
