Both these sides are a long way off the dominant English forces we saw in the late 2000s, with each going through their own transitional period as they look for a route back to the summit. Erik ten Hag’s United have been on a rollercoaster ride since the start of the season, with the highs of beating Liverpool and Arsenal quickly nullified in the Manchester derby.
Chelsea’s transition is much more recent, with the Blues showing signs of improvement in key areas since the arrival of tactician Graham Potter. He has tightened things up defensively, whilst also seemingly managing to get the best out of an attack that was misfiring under Thomas Tuchel. This is a huge match for both clubs, as it will give a real indication of where each side is in their rebuild.
Chelsea are undefeated at Stamford Bridge since the new manager took over, with back-to-back wins and clean sheets against AC Milan and Wolves most recently. However, United’s away record is among the best in the league, with three wins in their last four Premier League games on the road. The Reds will no doubt be happy to let Chelsea control proceedings on the ball, with United’s best work this season having come in the transition.
The hosts will need to deal with the counter-attacking threat offered by the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony if they are to pick up the points, whilst also carving out chances against a far better United defence than we have seen in recent years. This fixture is finely poised, and although we don’t expect it to be a high-scoring end-to-end affair, it should prove an exciting match.
