World Cup 2022: England Tournament Preview
This might be the most talented group of England players since the famous Euro 2004 squad. An incredibly deep pool of talent, with world class players scattered across the pitch and some of the most promising youngsters on the planet. But when it really matters, Southgate’s boys have failed to deliver.
They will get another opportunity to etch themselves in the history books in Qatar. After the comedown following Euro 2020 final defeat, a lot of questions were asked about the manager and his conservative tactics. Southgate will get his chance for redemption, but the sheer quality flooding this tournament will prove his biggest test yet.
Getting out of the group isn’t a given. England will kick things off against Iran, a game which they should navigate without too much trouble. Their second fixture will see them pitted against an ever-improving USA squad made up of players competing across some of Europe’s major leagues. Finally, a battle with home nation Wales could prove pivotal. Led by a hugely passionate Gareth Bale, it’s never an easy fixture.
Despite occupying a fairly tricky group, failure to reach the knockouts would be somewhat embarrassing. Southgate opted for a defence-first approach in the Euros – much to the dismay of many fans – a tactic which saw them squander an early lead when the final was there to be won.
Like it or not, England are over-reliant on Harry Kane. He is in scintillating domestic form for Spurs, and an injury to England’s captain would signal the end of their chances of winning the World Cup. However, if he stays fit and maintains his momentum, not only will he likely become England’s all-time leading goalscorer, he could also be lifting that illusive trophy.
