England vs Senegal Football Preview

England’s win over Wales saw them top the group comfortably, setting up a favourable round of 16 tie against AFCON champions Senegal. Southgate’s side would have been expected to win regardless, but the absence of Sadio Mane (injury) and Idrissa Gueye (suspended) has placed even greater emphasis on England’s superiority.

Since their opening game defeat against Netherlands, Senegal have been much improved going forward. However, despite scoring five goals in their last two matches, they have looked shaky at the back. Goals conceded against Netherlands and Ecuador were perhaps expected, but being on the receiving end of Qatar’s only World Cup goal does not bode well.

England will dominate proceedings with the ball at their feet. A certain amount of patience will be required as Senegal look to soak up pressure and hit the favourites on the counter. They will be dangerous in transition – Ismaila Sarr has shown his class this tournament and will be the catalyst on the left wing.

After easing Kyle Walker back to action against Wales, he will likely start at right back ahead of Kieran Trippier. His pace could be pivotal in stemming the influence of Sarr. If England can stop him, they win the game. Southgate has a staggering number of attacking options, all of which are staking a place for a starting spot.

But there is still a job to do. England simply cannot afford to lose. Can they rise to the occasion and advance to the next round?

England vs Senegal Football Odds

The bookies have England as 1.52 favourites, with Senegal 7.60 underdogs and a draw priced at 3.92. Both teams to score (2.40) is seen as less likely than either to keep a clean sheet (1.57), with Harry Kane (4.50) leading the odds to break the deadlock despite blanking in the group stages. Unsurprisingly, Sarr (13.00) is among the Senegalese favourites to open the scoring.

Betting Tips

England to win 2-0 – 5.90

We’re expecting England to put on a professional performance. They shouldn’t have too many issues dictating the tempo of the game and looking after the ball will reduce Senegal’s opportunities for transition. Southgate will be hoping to progress without too many scares.

England win to nil – 2.08

England’s backline should be good enough to keep a third consecutive clean sheet. They have a knack of shutting opponent’s out at major tournaments under Southgate – this could be the latest.

Marcus Rashford first goalscorer – 5.80

Rashford is hitting his stride at the perfect time. He looks to have done enough to cement a place in the starting line-up, and he could be key for England with his runs inside the full-back.
