England vs France Football Preview

After asserting their dominance on the world stage in 2018, France are probably the one nation you want to avoid at all costs. Unfortunately for England fans, it is the Three Lions that have the unenviable task of trying to stop the reigning champions in their tracks.

Led by Kylian Mbappe, France have looked electric going forward in Qatar. The 23-year-old has already scored five in four appearances and is at the heart of everything positive that Les Bleus do. But for all of their eye-catching attacking exploits, Didier Deschamps’ side have leaked goals. Robert Lewandowski’s late penalty means the French are yet to keep a clean sheet, including conceding goals against the likes of Australia and Tunisia.

Whilst a large part of Southgate’s preparations will undoubtedly be on how to nullify the France attack, England will be quietly confident in their own forward line. In a 3-0 thrashing of Senegal, Bukayo Saka took his tally to three goals, Phil Foden notched up two assists and Harry Kane netted for the first time this tournament.

England have looked consistently dangerous in the transition, something which they may look to target in the quarter-final. The incisive movements from either wing and willing midfield runners gives Kane plenty of support. If England can minimise the number of chances they concede at one end, they could find themselves advancing to a second consecutive World Cup semi-final.

England vs France Football Odds

The champions are 2.38 favourites to advance in 90 minutes, whilst England are 3.21 underdogs, and a draw is priced at 3.19. Both teams to score is at 1.85, with England to win and keep another clean sheet at 4.90. Mbappe is, perhaps unsurprisingly, favourite to open the scoring, followed by Kane (6.20) and Olivier Giroud (7.30).

Quarter-Final Betting Tips

England to win and both to score – 6.20

If you want to win the World Cup, you have to beat the best. Now is as good a time as any to play France. They are missing a number of key players, including Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante and Karim Benzema. They have also shown they are vulnerable defensively and are yet to keep a clean sheet. England will need to put together their best performance in years and ride their luck at times, but they pose a huge threat to France’s dominance.

Over 2.5 goals – 2.14

There has to be goals in this game. This bet has landed in all but two of the eight World Cup outings these nations have been involved in, a trend we expect to continue.

Mbappe to score at any time – 2.88

If you’re struggling to pick a winner, Mbappe to score at any time is a decent alternative. He is likely to claim all the individual awards should France progress and will be his side’s best chance at breaching the England defence this weekend.
