Manchester City vs Liverpool Football Preview

Nobody really knows what the intensity and quality of domestic football will be like on its return – we’ve never had a winter World Cup. But although the effects of the gruelling schedule are unknown, there is no doubt that Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp will be desperate for a winning return.

Manchester City have become the kings of this competition – they have won six of the nine EFL Cups since 2014. However, Liverpool ended their search for five consecutive triumphs last campaign, with the Reds once again standing in the way of City’s progression.

Liverpool might be having a poor season by their own standards, but they have still beaten City twice, once in the Community Shield and again in their first league meeting. In fact, Pep has not managed to get one over on Klopp in their last five matches. City’s last win over Liverpool was nearly two years ago.

For all of Liverpool’s impressive recent performances in this fixture, City do look to have a squad more capable of dealing with the demands of a recent international competition. We’re not sure how many of those that reached the latter stages in Qatar will feature, but there will be a few key names that will almost certainly play. The likes of Erling Haaland and Mo Salah have enjoyed a month off, whilst Kevin De Bruyne returned early due to Belgium being outed in the group stages.

There won’t be any holding back, and you can be pretty sure that if the big boys are fit, they’ll be playing.

Manchester City vs Liverpool Football Odds

It’s not too surprising to see City as favourites at 1.91, but Liverpool look good value for their 3.76 odds given their recent exploits in this match-up. Given the attacking talent likely on show, both teams to score at 1.50 looks a solid option to bulk up a combo, with over 2.5 goals (1.58) also heavily backed.

Man City vs Liverpool Betting Tips

Draw and both teams to score – 4.00

We like the look of a draw in 90 minutes. These teams are fairly even at the best of times, but it’s impossible to gauge how much of an impact the World Cup will have had. Both teams have also netted in six of the last seven clashes between these two.

Erling Haaland first goalscorer – 3.75

Haaland will be raring to go. He has had to sit back and watch his teammates play on the biggest stage, so we have no doubt he’ll be pressing Guardiola to play every minute. How long will it take before he’s back amongst the goals? It might not even take half hour.
