NFL: Super Bowl LVII Preview

Chiefs player Travis Kelce ahead of Super Bowl

The Philadelphia Eagles will meet the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII in Arizona on Sunday in what is often called the greatest show on earth.

While the Chiefs are returning to the Super Bowl after a one-year absence, the Eagles are playing in their first since beating the Patriots in 2017.

To add to the drama, Chiefs coach Andy Reid will be facing his old team while this year’s game will feature the youngest combined age between starting quarterbacks in Super Bowl history.

It’s also a game featuring the Kelce brothers, Chiefs tight end Travis and Eagles centre Jason.

Philadelphia cruised to a 38-7 win against New York in the divisional round before blowing out San Francisco in a 31-7 final in the NFC Championship.

Meanwhile, Kansas City played a pair of close games in the NFL playoffs 2023, beating Jacksonville by a touchdown in the divisional round and Cincinnati by three points in the AFC title game heading into the 2023 Super Bowl.

So, what can we expect from this matchup and who is likely to be holding the Vince Lombardi Trophy aloft on Sunday night? THE MATCHUP

This will be Patrick Mahomes’s third Super Bowl appearance in five seasons as Kansas City’s starting QB, while Jalen Hurts has led the Eagles to the Super Bowl in his second full season as the starting quarterback.

And though much of the talk going into this one will be about these two exciting young stars, Super Bowl LVII could well be decided by what’s happening in front of them.

No teams were better up front than the Eagles and Chiefs, with Philadelphia leading the NFL with 70 sacks, just ahead of Kansas City, who finished second in the league with 55.

On the offensive lines, both teams are trotting out three Pro Bowlers and two All-Pros and Kansas City only allowed 26 sacks, ranking third-best – including a 3.8 percent sack rate which was only bettered by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Philadelphia surprisingly struggled in these areas, surrendering 44 sacks (T-20th) and a sack rate of 7.6 percent (24th).

THE TEAMS

The last time Kansas City and Philadelphia played each other, in October 2021, Mahomes threw five touchdown passes in a 42-30 victory.

But this is different. This is a Super Bowl and anything can happen.

So let’s take a closer look at each team along with their strengths and weaknesses.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

Regular season: 14-3 | AFC seed: No. 1

The Chiefs were expected to face a stiff challenge in the AFC West this season, and that was looking like a possibility when the team opened with a record of 4-2.

But they lost just once the rest of the way, flanking that defeat with a pair of five-game winning streaks and at 14-3 cruised to its seventh consecutive division crown and earned the top seed on the AFC side of the playoff bracket and a first-round bye.

With Patrick Mahomes at quarterback the Chiefs will feel like they can get the better of any opponent.

The Chiefs led the league in scoring (28.2 points per game) and yards per play (6.4) in the regular season and it was a similar story in the playoffs as Mahomes improved his career post-season record to 10-3 with the victory over the Bengals in the Championship game.

In terms of defence, the Chiefs are capable of putting pressure on the opposing quarterback and their 55 sacks so far this season is second only to the Eagles.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

Regular season: 14-3 | NFC seed: No. 1

The Eagles began the year with a record of 8-0, not tasting defeat until Week 10, but then rebounded to win five in a row before Jalen Hurts suffered a sprained shoulder.

Gardner Minshew filled in, but the club dropped two straight to the Cowboys and Saints but following the return of Hurts were able to wrap up the conference’s top seed while finishing with a record of 14-3.

Led by star QB Jaylen Hurts, you could argue that the Eales have the best roster in the NFL in terms of strength across the board.

They can be a dominant rushing team behind the NFL’s best offensive line with Hurts joining the power running success along with Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott.

They also can be a dangerous downfield passing team, with Hurts letting the ball loose to dynamic wide receiver duo A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

The Chiefs have a 5-4 advantage in all-time meetings of the two clubs and the teams last squared off in 2021 with a 42-30 road win for Kansas City.

In their four previous Super Bowl appearances, the Chiefs are 2-2, most recently losing to the Buccaneers following the 2020 season.

The Eagles are 1-2 on their previous trips, most recently defeating the Patriots after the 2017 campaign.
