Cheltenham Festival Day Four

Friday 17th March

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

Live on ITV

The 2023 Cheltenham Festival sees four days of pulsating action at one of the most famous venues in the world. Day four is full of intriguing races and is always fun to attend if you can. Our betting expert has a selection for all the races taking place on day four and believes there is some great value out there. Look at this racecard and see if you agree with our expert selections.

13:30 – Triumph Hurdle

Our betting expert believes that Willie Mullins’ trained Lossiemouth looked like being a banker for this race until the horse’s reputation was tarnished somewhat when she lost her unbroken record against Gala Marceau. This, among other factors, has resulted in Blood Destiny being priced as the marginal favourite in this race.

Lossiemouth is still a fantastic horse, and thanks to its recent form, it is possible to take advantage of the better odds punters will be receiving. Comfort Zone and Scriptwriter are two horses worth backing if you fancy an outsider bet. The winner though according to NetBet’s betting expert is likely to come from these selections below.

Favourite: Blood Destiny 7/4

Value: Lossiemouth 15/8

14:10 – Handicap Hurdle

If you have read our tips for the previous three days, you might now be aware the Cheltenham Races are often Irish-dominated. This is another race which has seen 11 of the 16 winners being Irish trained. Willie Mullins achieved his first win at this race in 2010 with horse Thousand Stars and has picked up several more victories since. To be completely honest, our pieces will be twice as long if we included all of his achievements.

This year our betting expert believes we have a really open field on our hands, and these two bets below will give you a decent payout if successful.

Favourite: Filey Bay 5/1

Value: Pembroke 11/1

14:50 – Novices’ Hurdle

Irish-trained runners have been crowned champion four years on the trot and have won this race seven out of the last nine meetings. Mullins is going for his third win in four years, with his horse Embassy Gardens standing a great chance of placing high up.

His nephew Emmet Mullins also has a horse in this race with Corbetts Cross. Our betting expert, however, has gone really out of the box this year and has picked Sandor Clegane to cause an upset at 14/1.

Favourite: Three Card Brag 9/2

Value: Sandor Clegane 14/1

15:30 – Cheltenham Gold Cup

This one has the potential to be the race of the day since the top three of last year are set to race again. Galopin Des Champs is priced at 13/8 and it is easy to see why. A beautiful horse in full flow, and although the odds are not fantastic, no one would argue with you if you backed this horse to emerge victorious.

Noble Yeats, trained by Gordon Elliot, is somewhat of an unknown entity to the general public, but our expert believes punters should be all over this one with odds of 7/1.

Favourite: Galopin Des Champs 13/8

Value: Noble Yeats 7/1

16:10 – Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Chase

If you believe history is an omen to future succession, then you should back the brilliant Billaway. Nine horses in this race’s history have managed to become double champions, and the odds of this horse making it number 10 are appealing, according to our expert.

A bit of a fun fact for horse racing aficionados. All eight of the last winners to walk away with this trophy have been ten years plus. Vaucelet is the favourite but should be avoided since the bet doesn’t represent the best value.

Favourite: Vaucelet 13/5

Value: Billaway 15/2

16:50 – Mares’ Steeple Chase

Here we go again. A relatively new addition to the Cheltenham festival, which has Willie Mullins’ name all over it again. In the previous two years, he had been the favourite in both races, but it was the outsiders in his pack that emerged victorious.

The favourite for this race, Allegorie De Vassy, has won all four races since joining Mullins’ stable after arriving from France. Few would back against this horse. There is always an understandable aura regarding an unbeaten horse, so for this reason, our expert believes better value can be had elsewhere.

Jeremys Flame, trained by Gavin Cromwell, is a beautiful horse and impressed in his last race that took place in January. 11/2 are good odds, and this appears to be where the value lies.

Favourite: Alegorie De Vassy 11/10

Value: Jeremys Flame 11/2

17:30 – Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

The last race of the Cheltenham race is an absolute belter. All horse fans love selecting horses with big odds that stand a realistic chance of winning. This race has no overwhelming favourite, and history tells us that if you back a horse with high odds, you might be in luck since the last 10 of 14 runners to have won this race were priced at 10/1 and above.

Therefore whatever horse you back for this one, you will be receiving a great payout if your horse races past the finish line first.

Favourite: Imagine 5/1

Value: Might I 9/1
