The Masters 2023 Preview – Scheffler to Retain the Crown?

The Masters 2023

It’s time for the first golf major of the year as the world’s best flock to Augusta for the chance to get their hands on the Green Jacket. We’ve previewed the upcoming action and picked out some of the best betting tips from the latest golf odds.

NetBet are now paying 8 places on the Masters. Whether you like the look of one of the favourites, or fancy an outside bet, NetBet has got you covered.

The Masters 2023 Preview

World number one and reigning champion Scottie Scheffler is favourite to retain his title after picking up his first major win at Augusta in 2022. The 26-year-old has peaked in form at the perfect time, cruising to victory by five strokes in the Players Championship just a few weeks ago.

The bookies believe Rory McIlroy to be Scheffler’s closest competition in Georgia. The world number two finished runner-up by three strokes in 2022, and despite recently missing the cut at the Players, tends to show up in the Masters. McIlroy has made 14 appearances at Augusta, finishing in the top four on five occasions. It’s the only trophy missing from his cabinet – will 2023 be his year?

The third man making up a tight-knit top three favourites is Jon Rahm. The Spaniard was forced to withdraw from the Players due to illness, surrendering the world number one spot in the process. However, he has tasted success this year, most notably in the Genesis Invitational at the Riviera. Although 2022 was not Rahm’s best year for majors, he has made the top 10 in four of his six Augusta appearances and can beat anyone at the peak of his game.

It’s the world’s top three leading the odds, but there will be an enormity of talent in the field. Former champion Jordan Spieth and Players Championship runner-up Tyrrell Hatton are just a couple of the names hoping to upset the odds.

The Masters Betting Tips

Rory McIlroy to win the Masters – 7.00

It wasn’t a particularly impressive showing at the Players – McIlroy missed the cut. But this is a man that turns it on at the majors. He registered a top-10 finish in all four majors in 2022, including three top-five finishes, one of which was second place at Augusta.

He has four major wins to his name already, with the Masters the only tournament to have eluded him to date. At his peak, he’s probably the best golfer in the field, and we’re backing McIlroy to finally get his hands on the green jacket.

Will Zalatoris each way – 29.00

We like the look of Zalatoris each way at 28/1. The American was a runner-up in 2021, losing out by just one stroke to Hideki Matsuyama, and had another impressive year in 2022. He finished T6 at last year’s Masters, second at the PGA Championships, and T2 at the US Open.

When the 26-year-old makes the cut, he goes on to score well. Zalatoris has made the cut seven times in 10 major appearances, going on to finish in the top 10 six times and finishing runner-up on three occasions. He has made the top 10 in each of his two outings at the Masters – with NetBet paying 8 places, a £10 E/W bet could return £356 if he wins, or £71 if he places.
