PGA Championship Preview

We’re heading to the Oak Hill Country Club in New York for the second major of the year as world number one Jon Rahm looks to make it two wins from two on the biggest stage. We’ve previewed this week’s tournament and put together our best betting tips from the latest golf odds.

PGA Championship Preview

Rahm is the one to beat in New York – the Spaniard has been in impeccable form since the turn of the year. He registered three wins prior to his Masters victory and finished second in the Mexican Open just two weeks ago. Despite a disappointing T48 in last year’s PGA Championship, Rahm does have a T4 and T8 finish in this major.

The bookies have his closest competition as Scottie Scheffler – no surprises there. The 26-year-old has six top 10 finishes in nine appearances in 2023, including victories at the Phoenix Open and Players Championship. His previous outings in this tournament include a T4 in 2020, a T8 in 2021, and a missed cut last year. Given his impressive performances in recent months, he’ll almost certainly be sniffing around the top five.

Making up the top three favourites is Rory McIlroy, although it must be said, this is more on reputation than performance. Everyone knows what he is capable of but we are yet to see it this year. McIlroy missed the cut at both the Players Championship and the Masters, finishing a somewhat uninspired T47 in his last outing at the Wells Fargo.

The fan-favourite has won the competition twice, but not since 2014. In nearly a decade since, two eighth-place finishes are the pinnacle of his PGA performance, accompanied by four finishes outside the top 20 and a missed cut.

PGA Championship Betting Tips

Jon Rahm to win – 8.50

We’ve seen the best of Jon Rahm this year and we don’t think he’s done quite yet. He has played with remarkable consistency of late and will be fancied around Oak Hill Country Club. He looks the man to beat.

Viktor Hovland E/W – 26.00

Hovland is teetering on the brink of a major breakthrough. A T4 finish at last year’s US Open was followed by a T7 in the 2023 Masters, not to mention the T3 in a strong Players Championship field. It’s a matter of time before he gets his hands on a big one.

Matt Fitzpatrick: Top 10 finish – 4.00

After a ropey opening to the year, Fitzpatrick looks to have kickstarted his 2023 with a top 10 finish at the Masters. His last four major appearances include a T5 at last year’s PGA Championship, victory at the US Open, and now a T10 in the Masters. He’s becoming one to watch on the big stage.

Tournament Schedule

The PGA Championship will get underway on Thursday 18th May, with the final day’s action taking place on Sunday 21st May.

All four days of golf will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
