Royal Ascot: Day 1 Preview

Royal Ascot

We’re back at Royal Ascot for one of the world’s most prestigious flat-racing festivals! We’ve taken a look at the opening day’s action and put together some of our best betting tips based on the latest horse racing odds.

NetBet Sport are paying extra places on a number of races every day at Ascot, including the 15:05, 15:40, 17:00 and 17:35 on Tuesday. Head online to check out all the latest markets and odds.

14:30 – Queen Anne Stakes

We kick things off at Ascot with the Queen Ann Stakes, where the bookies are currently undecided on whether Modern Games or Inspiral will take the glory. We agree that they’re the two to watch, but just give the edge to Modern Games. The frontrunner impressed in good conditions recently at Newbury but also beat main rival Inspiral as recently as October. A cracking race to start the day.

Modern Games @ 2.88

15:05 – Coventry Stakes

The first of NetBet’s extra place races are on Tuesday, and it comes at the perfect time. There won’t be too many going against favourite River Tiber, with Aidan O’Brien’s two-year-old a potential star in the making. One that could cause a few issues is Givemethebeatboys, who has tasted success over 6f and looked good in the process. There is some each-way value in Army Ethos and Bobsleigh, the latter of which we fancy to place after a strong recent showing at Epsom.

Bobsleigh E/W @ 13.00

15:40 – King’s Stand Stakes

At 4.75, Coolangatta looks good value to topple favourite Highfield Princess. The three-year-old filly has won five of eight outings, placing in the top three in two more. James McDonald stands a good chance of a close-fought victory in this one, and with four places paid, we’d be surprised if there was no each-way return at the minimum.

Coolangatta E/W @ 4.75

16:20 – St James’ Palace Stakes

A strong showing in the 2000 Guineas gives us every reason to believe favourite Chaldean is the horse to beat. Frankie Dettori’s closest competition will likely be Aidan O’Brien’s Irish Guineas victor Paddington, with this race sure to be a close one. There is also some each-way value floating about with Isaac Shelby and Royal Scotsman in with a chance of pushing the frontrunners close.

Chaldean @ 3.00

Isaac Shelby E/W @ 9.50

17:00 – Ascot Stakes

Our first choice for the Ascot Stakes would have been Law of the Sea, but a lot of late money has seen the odds plunge. With NetBet paying five places, we’re looking slightly down the field toward Calling the Wind and Zoffee. Both offer good value at 11.00 and 13.00 respectively, but with some water forecast and likely ease in the ground, we’re siding with Chester Cup runner-up Zoffee.

Zoffee E/W @ 13.00

17:35 – Wolferton Stakes

Oisin Murphy and Buckaroo lead the way in the final race of the day, and it’s tough to see them getting beaten. There will be plenty of competition toward the front of the pack, but we fancy King of Conquest at 9.00. The Godolphin-owned gelding has run well this year, most recently beating second-favourite Saga at Newmarket and third-favourite Francesco Clemente at Goodwood. Could cause a shock toward the end of the day.

King of Conquest @ 9.00

18:10 – Copper Horse Handicap

It’s difficult to look anywhere other than the classy outfit Vauban in the day’s final race, so your best bet might be some each-way value. Chillingham has plenty of potential and has steadily improved since debuting in 2022, winning three of four flat races. Callum Rodriguez will need to steer the four-year-old to the ride of his life given the step up in competition, but with four places on offer, the odds do look tempting.

Chillingham E/W @ 11.00
