Rugby World Cup: England vs Chile Preview

England vs Chile Preview

England are back in action this weekend as they take on Chile in their penultimate group-stage game of the Rugby World Cup. Steve Borthwick’s side boasts an impressive two wins from two; welcome results for England fans given their erratic form coming into the tournament. Chile on the other hand are looking for their first win at a Rugby World Cup finals. Anything less than a convincing win for this England side will be seen as a botch job.

England vs Chile Preview

For the 2003 winners and 2019 runners-up, Chile should be a relatively easy prospect. The relative minnows currently sit at the bottom of Group D with two losses from two and a -63 point difference hanging over them.

This England side continues to play Jekyll and Hyde. After a brilliant performance against Argentina that showed all the steel and determination available; the performance against Japan was somewhat underwhelming. Is this English side overdoing it? The kicking tactics that worked so well didn’t seem to be paying dividends as Borthwick’s side found themselves only a point ahead at 13-12. While the game looked like it was opening up and Japan could see light at the end of the World Cup tunnel; only then did the English side manage to shut the door.

They were once again good at the breakdown and picked up a number of penalties through their power in the physical battle. But it was with the ball in hand that England were frustrating. Like a football team under the cosh, with players streaming forward, nobody seems to want the ball. It’s not under 12s and you won’t be smashed by the very large sixth former. It’s international rugby.

While last week the kicking game and tactics were on point, the Japan game pulls into question whether this England side has enough dimensions in their game to take on the big guns. You can’t kick forever. The whole affair seemed to be far more frustrating as things in the attack just didn’t click.

However, England still emerged with a bonus point win. The early frustrations were put to bed later on as this England side pulled away in the final 20 minutes or so. Good teams tend to win even when they don’t play particularly well, and although Japan aren’t the toughest of opponents, it’s a win in the World Cup nonetheless.

England will also be buoyed by the return of Owen Farrell and a positive introduction of Marcus Smith, who is tipped to start at full-back on Saturday. The two will be hoping to add that missing dimension in attack for England and give them an extra edge.

Rugby World Cup Betting Odds

Absolutely no surprise here that England are heavy favourites to take another win at 1.00, with Chile big outsiders at 51.00 and the draw at huge odds of 67.00.

The scoring range is England under 47 points @ 3.90. The total tries in the match is over 8.5 @ 1.44 and under @ 2.59

England vs Chile Betting Tips

Chile to score first @ 6.00

Although England comes in rightly favourites, there’s a chance Chile could crash into this one and put some points on the board early and make England sweat.

England under 47.5 @ 3.90

This could well be the match where the attack from England comes together. With Farrell back and a lively Smith, they could pile on the points against this struggling Chile side. But they haven’t been as free-scoring as fans would hope, and this provides a little value.
