Ryder Cup Preview

The 44th edition of the Ryder Cup gets underway on Friday at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy. The course is famed for its tight fairways and deep rough; there’s no doubt it’s a plotter’s course. Miss the fairways and greens by a yard or two and you’re in the thick stuff.

Team USA is full of big hitters, but that has not typically served them well on European soil and it won’t necessarily suit this course either. The last time they won away from the States was the famous 15-13 victory in 1993 at The Belfry. They have lost six Ryder Cups in Europe since, in England, Spain, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and France. In fact, Team Europe are amidst a period of sustained success in the competition. They have won seven of the last 10 Ryder Cups, taking their record to 11 wins in 21 appearances.

The 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits was one to forget for a European team captained by Padraig Harrington. They won just one of their eight matches on the opening day, with seven singles match defeats on Sunday sealing the 19-9 demolition job in favour of the USA.

However, they will be quietly confident in winning back the trophy in Rome. Their main man, Rory McIlroy, has been in electric form since missing back-to-back Players Championship and Masters cuts. In his 11 outings since, he has made 10 top 10s, including a second-place finish at the US Open and a win at the Scottish Open. When you sprinkle in the magic of world number three Jon Rahm, the red-hot talent of Viktor Hovland, and the experience of the likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Team Europe looks a force to be reckoned with.

However, Team USA is equally stacked on paper. Number one Scottie Scheffler is having one of the most consistent years on tour ever seen. He’ll be backed up by three of the four 2023 major winners, Brooks Koepka, Wyndham Clark, and Brian Harman. They will certainly be in with a great chance of retaining their title.

Ryder Cup Betting Tips

Team Europe to win the Ryder Cup – 2.10

Europe’s record on home soil speaks for itself. They are used to these brutal courses, where anything other than fairway and green can result in a lost ball. Their lineup boasts a blend of world-class talent and experienced pros, and with the full support of their continent, they’ll be desperate to get their hands on the Ryder Cup.

Rory McIlroy to score the most points for Europe – 5.50

Since missing the cut at the Masters, McIlroy has arguably been the best golfer on the planet. The world number two will be making his seventh Ryder Cup appearance – more than any other player competing – so he knows what it takes to win.

Top Wildcard Scorer: Tommy Fleetwood – 6.50

Fleetwood is no stranger to Ryder Cup success. He set the world alight alongside Francesco Molinari in 2018, with the pair winning all four of their foursome and fourballs to help Europe to a convincing 17.5-10.5 win at Le Golf National in France.
