Liverpool vs Everton Preview

Real Contenders?

Although it’s one of the most traditional derbies in the world, and one that most years is full of passion, drama, and history; the two clubs could not be more different at the moment. Liverpool have been slightly unfortunate this season. Yet, three points could propel Jurgen Klopp’s squad to the top, at least until Tottenham face Fulham on Monday. They have been the victim of poor refereeing, later winners, and some pretty bad luck. That being said, Spurs had moments where they deserved that win, so Liverpool can’t feel too hard done by.

But at this early stage of the season, Klopp’s side looks like one that could challenge for the top spot. Firstly, after a few teething problems, their midfield is starting to run properly. Dominik Szoboszlai has taken the number 8 shirt on and is doing his best Steven Gerrard impression. The Hungarian scored an absolute thunderbolt during the international break and could be pivotal in their title push. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Alexis MacAllister, who hasn’t looked his best since his World Cup heroics.

In 2023, Liverpool’s fortress remains unbreached in the Premier League, with only Leeds having managed to secure victory at Anfield since March 2021. However, defensive concerns linger for Liverpool. Virgil van Dijk no longer exudes invincibility at the heart of their defence, and doubts still persist around Trent Alexander-Arnold. A generational talent going forward, but questionable defending has led many to suggest a positional change for the England player.

Andy Robertson has suffered a shoulder injury while representing Scotland, casting doubt on his availability for the upcoming first Merseyside derby of the season. Additionally, Thiago, dealing with a groin issue, remains at least two weeks away from returning to full fitness. Curtis Jones, who received a red card in the match against Tottenham, is set to miss the second of his three-match suspension.

The Blue Club

It’s been a booing masterclass so far this season for Everton. It’s almost funny if you’re not a fan of the toffees. However, the blue side of Liverpool left on a high before the international break with a 3-0 home win against Bournemouth. Could this be the result that kicks them on? They sit 14th as it stands.

Everton endured a rough start to the season, managing only one point from their initial five fixtures. Sean Dyche’s side found themselves teetering just above the relegation zone. Their offensive struggles were evident, failing to find the net in the first three matches, which was one of the most frustrating parts for the Everton fanbase.

However, the addition of their new striker, Beto, provided a much-needed spark, and it was fellow newcomer Arnaut Danjuma who made an impact with a goal during their trip to Bramall Lane. Defensively, Everton have faced issues, conceding a total of nine goals in their opening five matches. Sean Dyche is the one tasked with the daunting task of shoring up their defence to address this vulnerability.

There aren’t many tougher places to go in world football than Anfield. Sean Dyche will need a 10/10 performance across the pitch if they are to get anything from this one. For Liverpool, it’s a chance to go top, even if it’s just for a few hours before Spurs and City play.

Merseyside Derby Betting Odds

No surprise that Liverpool come into this one as favorites. They are 1.34 to take this one at home and go top of the table for the first time in a few years. Everton arrive as massive outsiders, and given their recent form, it’s not a huge surprise. They are 7.20 to win away from home, with the draw priced at 5.40.

Mohammed Salah leads the scoring odds, placed at 4.60 to score first in the derby, with Darwin Nunez at 5.00 to open the scoring himself. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is tipped to score first for Everton at 11.00 or 4.20 any time.

Merseyside Derby Betting Tips

Mohammad Salah to score anytime, Liverpool to win, and over 1.5 goals @ 2.20

Salah loves a goal in the derby and the 33-year-old has already netted 8 times this season. The Reds will want to go top, even if it’s just for a couple of hours before Spurs play. With Everton’s leaky defence, Salah will be able to take advantage.

Liverpool to win 3-0 @ 9.80

Poor old Everton. Although they are rivals on paper, that’s about as far as it goes. Liverpool are streaks above the Blue side of River Mersey and this one could be a walkover at home for the Reds, given their incredible home form.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score any time @ 4.20

Could there be an unlikely hero here away from home? The Everton striker has bags of quality, and after a long period out with injury, he could be back and fit for this one.
