Chelsea vs Manchester City Preview

Manchester City have enjoyed this fixture over the past few years. They are unbeaten against Chelsea stretching back to September 2021. Not only that, but the Manchester side has won ten of the last fourteen encounters. It’s no surprise given their domestic dominance over the last ten to fifteen years. For Chelsea, it’s been a humbling experience. Going from the predator to the prey. What will this weekend look like?

Let’s start with Chelsea. Monday night brought us one of the most chaotic games of football I, or most people, have ever seen. While a lot of this was due to Ange Postecoglou and his swashbuckling, rave-style tactics; Chelsea played the part of frantic victors in this football match. Carnage on every level, the only thing that was missing was strobe lights and thumping techno.

The Spurs boss refused to change his moral footballing compass and, even with nine men attempted to press high up the pitch. This left Chelsea never more than one through ball away from being clean through. The West London side took advantage of this on numerous occasions and buried four past the home side after being a goal down.

But somehow, this 4-1 win didn’t look convincing. Watching the nine Spurs players playing an offside trap on the halfway line was almost martyrdom. By the time Chelsea got their go-ahead goal, they had been playing a ten-man side for nearly a whole half and nine men for another twenty. Nicolas Jackson should have scored six by this point, let alone three. As they piled in their third and fourth goal in injury time to take the game away from Spurs, who despite their number deficit still looked capable of the impossible, it was almost embarrassing they hadn’t scored more.

But, three points is three points. Despite the insanity of the match itself, the scoreline is factual evidence and a 4-1 win for Chelsea is just the sort of result they have been looking for against a big side. But this weekend will be by far their toughest task and the sloppiness they showed in the second half will worry Mauricio Pochettino when facing the treble winners.

High-Flying Manchester City

To juxtapose Chelsea, Manchester City continue their orderly dominance. They seem inevitable and even omnipresent at the top of every table and holding every trophy.

FC Young Boys were the latest side to feel the ruthless efficiency of Pep Guardiola’s side. While for periods they hung in the game, it was only ever going to finish one way. After Erling Haaland limped off at the weekend in their 6-1 battering of Bournemouth, it was unsurprising to see him net a brace last night given his machine-like qualities. Let him rest for an evening and like the terminator, “He’ll be back” to score again.

Jeremy Doku was the star of the show last Saturday and blew Bournemouth away. He will surely start again on Sunday and their insane wealth of attacking talents will be haunting an ageing, but still quality Thiago Silva. He and the Chelsea backline won’t have faced a more potent attack this year. But Manchester City will be without John Stones after he picked up an injury. Could this cause them issues?

Latest Premier League Football Betting Odds

There’s no surprise that City lead the odds coming into this one. They are 1.75 to win and stay top of the league for yet another weekend. Chelsea on the other hand are 4.40 and at fairly long odds to win at home. The draw is placed at 3.66.

In terms of goalscorers, Erling Haaland leads the odds at 3.76 with Julian Alvarez next at 6.50. After his hat-trick on Monday night, Nicolas Jackson is 9.80 to open the scoring against the champions.

Chelsea vs Manchester City Betting Tips

Bet Builder: Erling Haaland to score anytime, over 2.5 goals and Manchester City to win @ 3.10

Given the run of form and star quality, City will be confident they can get it done away from home here. The Chelsea defence has been leaky against worse attacks, and after another brace in mid-week, Haaland will want to get at least one here.

Both teams to score and Manchester City to win @ 3.45

Manchester City will come out winners, but the loss of John Stones will be massive for them, and the City side will miss the centre backs cool head and defensive qualities. Chelsea will fancy scoring at least one against the champions.
