Beterbiev vs Bivol Preview
Who will be crowned king of the Light Heavyweight division? This fight is sure to give the answers, but boxing fans have been made to wait in anticipation. This bout was originally scheduled for July, but was rescheduled after Beterbiev suffered an injury.
Beterbiev has unified three of the four Light Heavyweight division belts in the past couple of years, on the way to solidifying his reputation as one of the most feared men in the sport currently.
It was after his 2022 fight at Madison Square Garden with American Joe Smith Jr where he first held the IBF, WBC and WBO World Light Heavy titles, beating his opponent by knockout, as he has done in all of his 20 professional fights.
He then defended those titles by beating Brit Anthony Yarde, despite the younger contender showing early promise before eventually being stopped due to a TKO. This was followed by another successful defence via the defeat of another British boxer – this time Callum Smith. The fight was stopped in Round 7 as Beterbiev claimed another TKO victory to add to his perfect record, a record that has never been at more risk than it will be against Bivol.
Comparatively, Bivol has only faced two defences of his IBO title so far, but really started to draw the attention of the wider boxing world after he comfortably dealt with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in 2022. Since then, he has defeated Gilberto Ramirez, Lyndon Arthur and Malik Zinad – all by unanimous decision.
It was against Arthur that he first got his hands on a world title, imposing his style on his British opponent impressively, resulting in the three judges all scoring the bout 120-107 in Bivol’s favour. Next was Zinad, who was similarly outboxed by Bivol, setting up this mammoth fight of the year contender.
