Aston Villa vs Paris Saint-Germain: Champions League Preview

Aston Villa have a mountain to climb if they want to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Unai Emery’s side were beaten 3-1 in Paris last week thanks to Nuno Mendes’ injury-time goal, which means PSG are huge favourites to qualify.

But in the Champions League, comebacks are commonplace!

Aston Villa vs Paris Saint-Germain Preview

Emery himself knows all too well about famous Champions League comebacks.

When he was in charge of PSG, he had to watch on as Barcelona cancelled out his side’s 4-0 first-leg win with a historic 6-1 triumph at the Nou Camp.

That 2017 tie is still talked about to this very day and the Villa players will be aware of the opportunity to create a similar storyline.

However, it will be so tough against arguably the best side in Europe right now. PSG have already been crowned Ligue 1 champions and are yet to lose a match this season in the top flight.

Luis Enrique’s free-flowing outfit were also given a welcome rest on the weekend with no domestic fixture, although Emery was able to heavily rotate his side in last Saturday’s 3-0 win at Southampton.

Villa are in great form as well, with the loss in Paris a bit of an anomaly, as they won the other eight of their previous nine fixtures.

But can Villa’s midfield match Vitinha, Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz? And, perhaps more importantly; how can the defence limit the influence of Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia?

The attacking trio were devastating in the first leg and if Villa do not keep it tight at the back while looking for a goal themselves, the tie will be over before the half-time whistle is blown.

PSG will also be boosted by the return of skipper Marquinhos from suspension, who was exceptional in his side’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield in the last 16.

Aston Villa vs Paris Saint-Germain Betting Tips

Marcus Rashford to score anytime @ 3.51

While we have bigged up PSG in the preview, and rightly so, we can see Villa getting at least one goal. Rashford looks a man reborn in claret and blue, whether playing as the central striker or on the wing. The Manchester United loanee has scored three goals in five Champions League appearances against PSG.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to score anytime @ 3.08

Kvaratskhelia was unplayable at the Parc des Princes and scored a sensational second-half goal. The Georgian is a real maverick winger and he is a primary candidate to punish Villa on the counter.

Over 3.5 goals in the match @ 2.50

We really think there will be goals galore in this fascinating contest. Villa cannot afford to sit back and PSG seem to know only one way to play – and that is on the front foot! The Parisian entertainers rocking up at a raucous Villa Park? It could be a classic!
