UFC 316 Preview: Latest Odds & Best Bets

UFC 299: Sean O'Malley vs Chito Vera

The Octagon returns to Newark for a third straight year as UFC 316 serves up two bantamweight title fights headlining a stacked card at the Prudential Center.

In the main event, the powerhouse that is reigning men’s bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili defends his crown in a rematch with Sean O’Malley. The Georgian machine is known for his high-pressure fighting style and is riding a 12-fight unbeaten streak. He won last September’s clash with O’Malley by unanimous decision though “Suga” did carry an injury into that UFC 306 showdown which subsequently required surgery.

The co-main event sees Julianna Pena defend her women’s bantamweight title against two-time Olympic gold medallist Kayla Harrison. Pena overcame Raquel Pennington last October by split decision at UFC 307 to reclaim champion status. Harrison, who won judo golds in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, was also a winner at UFC 307 beating Ketlen Vieira by unanimous decision. She will be looking to finish this clash early on to test Pena’s strength and resilience.

The main card is rounded out with high-stakes clashes up and down the weight classes. Kelvin Gastelum finally gets his hands on Joe Pyfer after their Mexico City matchup fell apart due to the latter’s illness. Pyfer is coming off a brutal first-round KO win over Marc-Andre Barriault in June last year and is 4-1 in the UFC, but Gastelum is a savvy veteran with a granite chin and is back at the 185lb division, where he has excelled through his career.

Then there’s the bantamweight banger between Mario Bautista and Patchy Mix while the main card opens with Vicente Luque vs. Kevin Holland, two high action merchants who always deliver.

We could be in for a night of endurance so a Winning Method double on the two title fights is worth a look. As an indicator, Dvalishvili by decision is 4/6 with overall Winner By Decision odds set at 4/11. Pena vs. Harrison going the distance is 31/20 so backing both fights to go to a decision as an Alternative Winning Method Combi gives a healthy 12/5.

Surprisingly for a defending champion Pena’s 5/1 price sets her very much as the underdog against challenger Harrison (13/100), a figure that may be too generous to ignore.

Joe Pyfer likes to get his work done early on and although he’s facing the immovable force that is Kelvin Gastelum he’s promised to deliver a KO within two rounds. Pyfer in Round 1 or 2 is an attractive 9/5.

Patchy Mix is making his UFC debut as a replacement for Marlon Vera but is favourite to beat highly experienced Mario Bautista. However, with a seven-fight win streak stretching back over three years, Bautista shouldn’t be underestimated and looks good value at 29/20 for the win.
