Cricket: England vs India Second Test Preview

England are looking to go 2-0 up in the Test series against India following their superb 371-run chase at Headingley.

Joe Root and Jamie Smith saw England home on the fifth day, with the opposition bowlers unable to take control of the game in the latter stages.

But it really was a thrilling First Test and we can only hope for much of the same at Edgbaston in Birmingham, with the action getting underway at 11am on Wednesday.

Read on for NetBet’s preview for the Second Test, complete with the latest cricket odds for your midweek bet.

England vs India Second Test Preview

England have named an unchanged XI for the Second Test, with the returning Jofra Archer being kept on ice for the time being.

So it means Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse will be the leaders of the attack, with captain Ben Stokes, Josh Tongue and Shoaib Bashir providing support in the bowling department.

The batting lineup looks solid, with also enough flair to take down any bowling attack – even one containing Jasprit Bumrah, as proven at Headingley.

There is much mystery surrounding Bumrah right now as to whether he will be involved at Edgbaston, given the fact that he is reportedly only able to play three of the five Tests this summer.

If he is not involved, expect left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh to come in, a player who has wreaked havoc on batters in the Indian Premier League.

All-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar are also candidates to make the XI, particularly as they can provide handy runs down the order.

Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur’s inability to halt the collapses in each of India’s innings last time out could see them drop out of the side, despite the latter picking up two wickets in two balls in England’s second innings.

So many questions – more of them focused on India than England – need to be answered and we just cannot wait for the cricketing action to get underway tomorrow!

When these two sides met at Edgbaston in 2022, England pulled off a national record chase of 378 to win the match, reaching the total in under 77 overs and losing just three wickets.

England vs India Second Test Betting Tips

Ollie Pope to score a 50 in the match – Yes @ 1.88

Pope scored a superb century in England’s first innings at Headingley and is beginning to look settled as his nation’s No3. We are backing him to make another sizeable contribution in Birmingham.

Yashasvi Jaiswal to score a 50 in the match – Yes @ 1.78

After his dropped catches in Leeds, Jaiswal needs to stand tall in the Second Test. And a player of his quality can certainly do that, particularly with the record he has against England. The opener averages 81.70 in Tests against the Three Lions, a quite extraordinary feat.

Top bowler – Chris Woakes @ 7.00

Woakes was well below par at Headingley, but with miles in the legs, he can deliver for England with the ball this time around. His record at Edgbaston is pretty good too, taking 13 wickets in six innings at an average of 24.53.
