Championship 2025/26 Preview
As expected, two of the biggest stories heading into the new Championship season are the potential plights of a pair of promoted clubs – the aforementioned Birmingham and, of course, Wrexham.
Birmingham, co-owned by NFL legend Tom Brady, have brought in some top names this summer, including Kyogo Furuhashi, Tommy Doyle, Demarai Gray and Bright Osayi-Samuel.
Wrexham, primarily owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Ryan McElhenney, have also bolstered their squad with new signings, including Conor Coady, Danny Ward, Ryan Hardie, Josh Windass and Lewis O’Brien.
So all eyes will be focused on those two clubs, particularly at the beginning of the campaign as they try to adjust to life in the second tier of English football.
And the furore surrounding both Birmingham and Wrexham may play into the hands of other clubs tipped for promotion.
Ipswich, Southampton and Leicester all dropped down from last season’s Premier League, with each of them retaining a strong core of players suited to Championship football. Usually the limelight is fully focused on the ex-top flight teams, but the presence of Birmingham and Wrexham has changed all that.
Elsewhere, Sheffield United, Coventry, West Brom, Middlesbrough, Norwich and Millwall will look to push for places in the coveted Top 6.
We could be in for one of the most competitive Championship seasons to date, although it may be one to forget for crisis club Sheffield Wednesday, who are being widely tipped to go down after financial troubles which have prompted recent rumours of a player strike.
And it will be interesting to see whether the other promoted club, Charlton Athletic, can avoid dropping back down to League One, with QPR, Oxford United, Preston and Portsmouth all being viewed as strong candidates for relegation.
So, let’s take a look at all the outright odds before the start of the season…
