Liverpool vs Arsenal Preview
Last season’s top two arrive at Anfield with maximum points from the first two matchdays, with Arsenal currently top of the pile on goal difference.
Champions Liverpool had to dig deep against Newcastle on Monday evening, conceding twice against 10 men only for substitute Rio Ngumoha to secure a 3-2 victory at St James’ Park with a 100th-minute strike.
It is the second game in which Arne Slot’s Reds have conceded twice following the 4-2 home win over Bournemouth on Matchday 1 – and that should pique the interest of Arsenal.
The Gunners were rampant at the Emirates last Saturday, thrashing Leeds 5-0 with two goals from summer signing Viktor Gyokeres.
However, the match was not without its negatives, as Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka each had to leave the field with injury. The pair are unlikely to feature at Anfield, with Kai Havertz also condemned to the treatment table.
But their absences may not impact Arsenal as much as in previous seasons, because Mikel Arteta can now call upon Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Gyokeres.
However, Slot has some new attacking weapons at his disposal, namely Hugo Ekitike – who has scored in each of his first three competitive games for the Reds.
Florian Wirtz is another big-money summer recruit, though the German has not performed as initially hoped so far, albeit from a very small sample size.
It will be interesting to see whether Slot deploys Wirtz in the No10 role again, as he runs the risk of getting overrun by Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice, as well as full-backs Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori when they invert into midfield.
It is shaping up to be a classic on Merseyside, which is exactly what it was last season. Liverpool stormed into a 2-0 lead at Anfield, only for Arsenal to come back in style and earn a 2-2 credible draw.
The Gunners have not lost at Anfield since November 2021, though their last victory at the stadium was way back in September 2012, when goals from Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski secured a 2-0 win.
Arteta featured in that match, and even without Saka and potentially Odegaard, the onus is on the Arsenal boss to emulate that success 13 years on – and put down an early marker in the title race!
But Slot’s Liverpool just always seem to find a way…

Liverpool vs Arsenal Betting Tips
Player to score or assist – Declan Rice @ 3.50
Rice has picked up two assists from corners at the start of this season. His delivery is arguably the best in the world right now and set-pieces could be a vital source of chances for Arsenal against a Liverpool side lacking in height compared to the Gunners. So this could be a great source of value for bettors!
Hugo Ekitike to have over 0.5 shots on target @ 1.73
Ekitike has already recorded three shots on target in the Premier League season, and while the Gunners are the best defensive team in the division, Liverpool always create chances aplenty at Anfield. This selection looks like a no-brainer to us.
Viktor Gyokeres to commit over 1.5 fouls @ 2.63
We expect Liverpool to dominate possession on their own patch, meaning Gyokeres is going to have to do a lot of pressing from the front. This usually results in a striker becoming a tad frustrated and subsequently committing fouls, which is why this market has really caught our eye. Gyokeres has already committed four fouls this season, an average of two per game.
