Scotland vs Greece – 2026 World Cup Qualifier Preview

Scotland vs Greece Preview

Scotland continue their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup with a tricky-looking qualifier against Greece later this evening.

Steve Clarke’s side were drawn into a fairly tough four-team group alongside current leaders Denmark and Belarus.

As such, victories on home soil are an absolute must for the Tartan Army, which sets us up for a fantastic match in front of a raucous Hampden Park crowd.

Scotland vs Greece Preview

Scotland’s qualifying campaign has started pretty well, with a 0-0 draw in Denmark followed by a 2-0 away victory vs Belarus.

Two clean sheets in a row is always an impressive feat on the international stage, and Clarke has plenty of firepower further forward to compliment the pragmatic excellence.

Scott McTominay, Ben Gannon Doak, John McGinn and Che Adams are all quality operators, while the Serie A-based midfield duo of Billy Gilmour (Napoli) and Lewis Ferguson (Bologna) can hold its own against any side.

Skipper Andy Robertson also looks set to be available for selection despite hobbling off in Liverpool’s 2-1 loss at Chelsea, which is a huge boost for the Scots.

But Greece also possess fantastic players who are ready for this fixture, namely Benfica striker Vangelids Pavlidis and Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis, who have 23 goal contributions between them on club duty this season.

And in defence, West Ham’s Konstantinos Mavropanos and ex-Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas (now on loan at Roma) are each solid operators who can frustrate Scotland’s attack.

However, despite possessing some well-known stars, Greece’s last competitive match was a bit of a disaster, as they suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Denmark.

But perhaps that performance was something of an anomaly, because the Greeks followed it with back-to-back friendly wins vs Bulgaria (4-0) and Slovakia (4-1).

Furthermore, Greece thrashed Belarus 5-1 in their first qualifier, with Pavlidis and Tzolis both on the scoresheet. So Scotland will be well aware of the threat posed by the opposition, especially after their two-legged Nations League play-off tie back in March.

Clarke’s side won the first leg in Greece 1-0, but then lost 3-0 at Hampden Park in the second meeting.

A repeat of that result would be catastrophic for the Tartan Army…

Scotland vs Greece Betting Tips

Anytime goalscorer – Scott McTominay @ 4.33

On big nights for Scotland, McTominay always seems to rise to the occasion. The all-action midfielder has only scored once for Napoli in Serie A this season after netting 12 times last term, but he is still Scotland’s biggest attacking threat. Lest we forget, McTominay scored from the penalty spot to seal the 1-0 win in Greece back in March, so he could make a mockery of his odds here.

Anytime goalscorer – Christos Tzolis @ 4.00

Tzolis has been in superb form with Club Brugge this term, registering six goals and eight assists from 17 matches across all competitions. The fleet-footed winger scored on the last visit to Hampden Park – helping secure the memorable 3-0 win – and has four goals in his last seven international matches, a quite superb record.

Total goals – Over 2.5 @ 2.27

As we are backing two goalscorers, it feels only right to tip this selection. While this could be a cagey game to start given its undeniable importance, one goal could change everything, and see us treated to more of an open affair.
