Newcastle vs Chelsea Preview

Recent results

As previously mentioned, these two teams secured their places in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup. Chelsea won 3-1 at Cardiff on Tuesday, before a late Lewis Miley strike earned Newcastle a 2-1 victory over Fulham the following day.

In terms of Premier League results, the Magpies are looking to bounce back from last Sunday’s dismal 1-0 loss at rivals Sunderland, while Chelsea looked good in their 2-0 home win over Everton.

But at home, Newcastle have been very strong of late, winning eight of the last nine across all competitions. And away trips are not really Chelsea’s forte in recent weeks, with the win at Cardiff one of only two in the last six on the road.

Head-to-head record

Newcastle won both meetings at St James’ Park last season, both by a 2-0 scoreline. In fact, Chelsea have lost the last four on Tyneside, their last win coming way back in October 2021.

Team news

Newcastle and Eddie Howe are struggling with defensive injuries. Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Emil Krafth all remain out of contention, while William Osula is also unavailable.

Estevao is a new absentee for Chelsea after missing the trip to Cardiff with a knock. Enzo Maresca is also without the services of Romeo Lavia, Liam Delap and Levi Colwill. However, Cole Palmer is expected to return to the squad as he continues to manage his workload.

Newcastle vs Chelsea Odds

Newcastle are slight underdogs on home soil at a price of 2.72. A win for Chelsea is priced at 2.45, while the draw is 3.45.

Newcastle vs Chelsea Betting Tips

Anytime goalscorer – Yoane Wissa @ 3.10

Wissa scored his first goal for the club against Fulham, and looked really sharp from the get-go. With Nick Woltemade struggling for confidence following his own goal at Sunderland, Howe may start Wissa here – and if he does, we are backing him to deliver again at St James’.

To assist a goal double chance – Cole Palmer OR Joao Pedro @ 2.50

With Newcastle hampered by defensive injuries, we expect Chelsea to score at least once. And the odds on one of their two most creative players having a major role in the goal look fantastic. Pedro already has three assists in the Premier League, while Palmer is renowned for his chance-creating ability.

Pedro Neto to have over 0.5 shots on target @ 2.20

Neto has really upped his game in the final third this season. With five goals, he is Chelsea’s leading scorer in the top flight. So the odds here on him to register just one shot on target look almost too good to be true, a Christmas miracle if you will!
