Manchester City vs Newcastle Preview

Recent results

Things have been chaotic for City since the first-leg win on Tyneside. Back-to-back defeats vs Manchester United (2-0) and Bodo/Glimt (3-1) followed, before consecutive 2-0 wins over Wolves and Galatasaray. But City slipped up again on the weekend, surrendering a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Tottenham – and hand Arsenal a six-point lead at the top of the table.

Things have been even worse for Newcastle, with a 3-0 win at PSV the only victory in the last five matches. A 0-0 draw at Wolves was followed by a 2-0 home loss vs Aston Villa, while Eddie Howe’s boys lost 4-1 at Liverpool last Saturday. The 1-1 draw at Paris Saint-Germain a few days prior was perhaps a reminder of the Magpies’ quality, although possessing the sixth-worst away record in the Premier League after the Anfield implosion is a concerning matter indeed.

Head-to-head record

Newcastle have won just one match at the Etihad since the stadium opened in August 2003, and that was an EFL Cup game in October 2014.

To say it is a woeful record is something of an understatement, with City winning each of the last seven contests on their own patch without conceding, scoring 21 goals at the same time. Ouch.

Team news

Marc Guehi is ineligible for City, as he was not registered in time. The centre-back would also miss the final should the Citizens reach it. His absence leaves Guardiola with a bit of a headache, as Ruben Dias has only just returned to training, while Josko Gvardiol and John Stones are injured. Rayan Cherki is also a doubt after picking up a knock vs Spurs, with Jeremy Doku and Savinho each on the treatment table for a little while longer.

Newcastle’s fitness issues are starting to become a real problem. Captain Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley and Sven Botman are all major doubts, with Joelinton, Tino Livramento and Fabian Schar certain to miss out. Far from ideal ahead of a trip to the Etihad!

Manchester City vs Newcastle Betting Tips

Anytime goalscorer – Antoine Semenyo @ 2.35

Semenyo scored in the first leg, and was also on target in each of the last two Premier League matches vs Wolves and Spurs. While City have not performed overly well as a unit since his arrival, the Ghanaian winger looks an absolute steal at £65 million – and we are backing him to continue his fine start to life in Manchester.

Antoine Semenyo to have over 1.5 shots on target @ 4.50

We just cannot work out why the odds here are so high, but the value to be had here is exceptional as a result. Semenyo registered two shots on target against both Wolves and Spurs, and only Erling Haaland has recorded more SOT in the Premier League this season. Furthermore, Newcastle’s defensive injuries only increase the appeal of this selection.

Anthony Gordon to have over 0.5 shots on target @ 2.10

Gordon looked a real threat at times as the No9 at Anfield, scoring the opener and registering two shots on target. With Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa each flattering to deceive, Howe may opt to use Gordon as the focal point of attack again here, particularly as his pace can really test City’s often reckless high line. And if that is the case, the chance to more-than-double your money from this SOT market is one well worth taking.
