Qarabag vs Newcastle – Champions League 2025/26 Match Preview & Betting Tips

Newcastle are looking to make it six Premier League teams in this season’s Champions League’s Round of 16, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea already qualified.

The Magpies just missed out on a spot in the Top 8, and will now have to get past Qarabag in their two-legged play-off tie.

And while the odds are firmly stacked in Newcastle’s favour, a trip to Azerbaijan at this time of year – and with injuries piling up – is not exactly ideal!

Qarabag vs Newcastle Preview

Recent results

Qarabag lost 6-0 to Liverpool at Anfield in their final League Phase match, though their previous outing against Premier League opposition saw them draw 2-2 at home vs Chelsea. The Horsemen also beat Benfica 3-2 away on Matchday 1, and collected home wins over FC Copenhagen (2-0) and Eintracht Frankfurt (3-2). Domestically, Qarabag have won each of the last three league games after defeating Mil-Mugan 1-0 on the weekend.

Newcastle drew 1-1 at holders Paris Saint-Germain on Matchday 8, but the result was not enough to avoid the play-offs. The Magpies have been strong at home in this competition, but away struggles vs Marseille (2-1) and Bayer Leverkusen (2-2) highlighted some of the side’s shortcomings. However, Eddie Howe’s men recorded a huge 3-1 win at Aston Villa in the FA Cup last Saturday, which followed the 2-1 Premier League victory at Tottenham.

Head-to-head record

Unsurprisingly, this is the first competitive meeting between Qarabag and Newcastle.

Team news

Qarabag have no real injury issues to contend with. Key forwards Leandro Andrade and Camilo Duran are each available, the pair accounting for seven of the hosts’ 13 goals in the League Phase.

Bruno Guimaraes is the major absentee for Newcastle, the Brazilian midfielder ruled out for a while with a serious hamstring injury. The Magpies skipper joins a fairly busy treatment room which includes Fabian Schar, Tino Livremento, Joelinton and Lewis Miley. Yoane Wissa and Sven Botman are also fitness doubts here.

Qarabag vs Newcastle Betting Tips

Both teams to score – Yes @ 1.83

Qarabag have certainly not found it hard to score goals at home in the Champions League. From four matches in front of their own fans, the Azerbaijani side tallied nine of them. Three of those games saw both teams score, with Qarabag conceding eight times overall. With Newcastle failing to keep a clean sheet in their last three European away trips, the BTTS selection looks great value.

Player to score or assist – Anthony Gordon @ 1.95

Gordon has been Newcastle’s main man in this season’s Champions League. The Englishman has six goals and an assist from eight appearances, with four of those contributions recorded away from home.

Anthony Gordon to have over 1.5 shots on target @ 4.50

And if you want higher odds on a Gordon-themed selection, look no further. The Newcastle winger has taken 18 shots on goal in the Champions League this season, and with Howe likely to deploy him as a false No9 here, we expect him to test the Qarabag goalie on multiple occasions.
