Newcastle vs Qarabag Preview

Recent results

Newcastle’s three-match winning run across all competitions came to a halt last Saturday as the Magpies lost 2-1 at title-chasing Manchester City. However, it was a spirited performance overall, one which manager Eddie Howe should take confidence from. This is Newcastle’s first home match since the start of the month, when they lost 3-2 to Brentford.

Qarabag enjoyed a welcome weekend off after the trashing dealt to them last week. Gurban Gurbanov’s side won their previous two away top-flight fixtures, but the last match on the road in this competition saw them lose 6–0 to Liverpool.

Head-to-head record

The 6-1 victory for Newcastle in the first leg was the first competitive meeting between the two sides. Qarabag have failed to win any of their 10 matches against English opposition, losing nine and draw one (which was the 2-2 draw vs Chelsea).

Team news

Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley, Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth are all out for Newcastle, while Yoane Wissa and Sven Botman remain doubts.

As with the first leg, Qarabag are looking pretty good on the injury front, so expect a similar XI to be fielded. However, Bahlul Mustafazada was forced off after just 22 minutes last week, and he is unvailable here.

Newcastle vs Qarabag Betting Tips

Newcastle total goals – Over 2.5 @ 1.51

Even if Howe does choose to field a second-string XI, Newcastle should have more-than enough quality to score multiple goals at St James’. As previously mentioned, Qarabag’s last trip to England saw them lose 6-0 to Liverpool at Anfield!

Both teams to score – Yes @ 1.94

But a potentially weaker Newcastle XI – on paper at least – increases the chances of Qarabag joining the hosts on the scoresheet. The visiting side have netted at least one goal in each of the last five matches across all competitions.

Anytime goalscorer – Harvey Barnes @ 1.70

Barnes only featured from the bench in the defeat to City on the weekend, so expect him to be reinstated to the starting XI here. And Barnes has a good record in Champions League action this season, netting five goals in nine previous appearances – three of them coming in wins at St James’ vs Benfica and PSV.
