The 2026 World Cup is nearly upon us, a 48-team tournament which will dominate the sporting narrative for well over a month.
More information on the competition can be found in our handy ‘Everything You Need to Know’ guide.
But this blog is focused solely on the favourites to lift the trophy at the MetLife Stadium on July 19.
Below are the latest outright World Cup odds on NetBet Sport, and we will look a bit more closely at the top contenders.
*All odds are subject to change (Each Way: 1/2 odds 2 places)
Spain – 5.50
Reigning European champions Spain arrive in North America as the favourites. La Roja won the World Cup back in 2010, and the current squad is packed full of talent – spearheaded by young stars Lamine Yamal and Pedri, and anchored by ex-Ballon d’Or winner Rodri. Stopping Luis de la Fuente’s side will be very tough indeed, highlighted further by the fact you have to go back to March 2023 for the last time Spain lost a competitive football match in 90 minutes – a quite ridiculous record!
France – 6.00
This is expected to be Didier Deschamps’ last tournament in charge after winning the World Cup in 2018 and finishing as runner-up last time out in Qatar. And the France boss has a plethora of world-class attacking options at his disposal this time around, including captain Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Desire Doue. Add in the likes of William Saliba, Jules Kounde and Mike Maignan, and you have one of the greatest international squads ever assembled. Backing Les Bleus is perhaps the standout pre-tournament option.
England – 7.00
Can England finally end all the years of hurt? It is down to Thomas Tuchel to finally get the Three Lions over the line. England were eliminated by France in the 2022 quarter-finals, though back-to-back European Championship final appearances proves their ability to compete in the later rounds. And with Harry Kane scoring goals for fun whenever he plays, as well as the imperious form of Declan Rice, the Three Lions look a very, very strong outfit. A qualifying record of eight wins from eight, 22 goals scored and zero conceded only helps to support that statement.
Argentina – 9.00
The reigning world and Copa America champions are perhaps not quite the same team we saw in Qatar three-and-a-half years ago. Captain Lionel Messi is now 38 and nearing the very end of his career, while key players in Alexis Mac Allister and Cristian Romero endured tough Premier League seasons. Although, Argentina still strolled through CONMEBOL qualifying with 12 wins from 18 – including victories home (4-1) and away (0-1) vs Brazil. So rule them out at your own peril!
Brazil – 9.00
Carlo Ancelotti has been tasked with reviving Brazil to its former greatness. The five-time world champions last lifted the trophy in 2002, and lost out to Croatia in the 2022 quarters. And the Selecao’s qualification campaign was far from convincing, with just eight wins recorded in 18 games. So it is strange to see them at such a low price, even if the squad is littered with high-quality players in the likes of Gabriel Magalhaes, Bruno Guimaraes, Neymar, Raphinha and Vinicius Junior. The awakening of a sleeping giant in 2026? Or another unconvincing campaign? The latter looks more likely.
Portugal – 11.00
Portugal seem to be the team flying under the radar, made clear by their relatively high price here. Roberto Martinez has arguably the best collection of midfielders available at international level in Vitinha, Joao Neves, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva. Add in veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo, a world-beating left-back in Nuno Mendes and other top names, and the recently-crowned Nations League champions could finally be ready to end their wait for a first World Cup title.
Germany – 15.00
Since their 2014 World Cup win, inconsistency has plagued Germany. Back-to-back group stage exits in 2018 and 2022 is not befitting the status of four-time winners. Die Mannschaft performed better at a home European Championship in 2024, losing out to eventual winners Spain in the quarters. However, the Germans are not the team once feared by the rest – and it is clear that Julian Nagelsmann is overseeing a period of transition. His team should cruise into the knockout stage, but challenging the likes of Spain, France and England looks a step too far in 2026.
Netherlands – 21.00
The Dutch are regulars in the World Cup knockout stage, although the current squad seems to lack the real star quality to challenge the elite – particularly in attack. Further back, Virgil van Dijk, Micky van de Ven, Jurrien Timber, Ryan Graveberch and Frenkie de Jong represent a high-quality core, but an offensive department featuring old warhorses in Memphis Depay and Wout Weghorst is not one which will scare many teams. As such, the pre-tournament price seems pretty fair.
Norway – 26.00
Already billed as this World Cup’s ‘dark horse’, Norway have the form and players to go deep into the tournament. The Scandinavians won all eight qualifiers, scoring a ridiculous 37 goals in the process – as well as thrashing Italy home (3-0) and away (1-4). In Erling Haaland, Norway possess a truly world-class striker who has scored 55 goals in 49 international appearances. And he is supported by the likes of Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard, Alexander Sorloth, Antonio Nusa and many more top players from Europe. Norway’s final group match against France may shed more light on whether they can actually challenge for the trophy, or fail to match the pre-tournament hype.
