Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina – World Cup 2026 Match Preview & Betting Tips

Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina Preview

World Cup 2026 co-hosts Canada kick off their tournament on Friday evening with a Group B match against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Toronto.

It is just the third tournament appearance for the Canadians, and the nation are yet to taste victory on the biggest sporting stage of all.

Jesse Marsch’s side are expected to change that for the better this summer, though a stubborn Bosnia & Herzegovina team – who qualified via the UEFA play-offs – represents a tough first examination.

Recent results

Since losing on penalties to Guatemala in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-finals last June, Canada have played 11 friendly matches and won five of them. Marsch’s side most recently drew 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland, after beating Uzbekistan 2-0.

Bosnia & Herzegovina beat Romania 3-1 in their penultimate qualifier, but a 1-1 draw with Austria on the final matchday saw them have to enter the play-offs. Sergej Barbarez’s side then beat both Wales and – more impressively – Italy on penalties to reach the World Cup stage for only the second time. The European side failed to impress in their warm-up games, though, drawing with North Macedonia (0-0) and Panama (1-1).

Head-to-head record

This is the first meeting between Canada and Bosnia & Herzegovina in any competition.

Team news

Canada’s squad is perhaps the strongest it has ever been – on paper at least. Several players operating at top European clubs are available to Marsch, including Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Tajon Buchanan (Villarreal) and Jonathan David (Juventus).

However, Nice centre-back Moise Bambito – widely regarded as the team’s best defender – has lost his race to be fit for the World Cup, while influential attacker Marcelo Flores is also ruled out after recently tearing his ACL while playing for Tigres UANL. Two significant blows, it must be said.

Edin Dzeko, now 40 years of age, is part of Bosnia & Hezergovina’s squad and he has 73 international goals to his name from 148 appearances – quite the record that.

Former Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac is also a key figure in the roster, and he now plays his football with Atalanta in Italy.

Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina Odds

*All odds are subject to change

Canada are the favourites to claim the win here at odds of 1.76. A victory for Bosnia & Herzegovina is priced at 4.40, while the draw is 3.61.

Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina Betting Tips

Total goals – Under 2.5 @ 1.65

Seven of Canada’s previous eight friendlies saw under 2.5 goals scored, with three of those games ending 0-0. And in all of Bosnia & Herzegovina’s last five games, a maximum of two goals were scored. So this under 2.5 selection looks great as either a single bet or part of a combo.

Anytime goalscorer – Jonathan David @ 2.40

However, while we are backing a low-scoring thriller in Toronto, we still fancy Canada to get on the scoresheet. David is viewed as the talismanic force in attack, with 39 goals in 77 previous appearances. He is three games without a goal, but did net a brace in the victory over Iceland back in March – and therefore gets our nod of approval here.

Bosnia & Herzegovina total goals – Under 0.5 @ 2.11

This is the riskiest pick of the lot. However, Canada have made a habit of keeping clean sheets in recent times. Marsch’s men did not concede a single goal in eight of the last 11 friendly matches, which is a very good record indeed. Bosnia & Herzegovina scored just one goal in their two warm-up matches, so there is certainly method to the madness here.
