Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has told NetBet that he believes the Reds should target PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as a replacement for Mohamed Salah, rather than reported target Yan Diomande.
Salah and Diomande are currently at World Cup 2026 with Egypt and Ivory Coast respectively, and throughout the tournament NetBet Sport will be running some exciting football betting promotions and offers – more of which you can learn about here.
When asked about Liverpool’s interest in RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, Murphy said: “Diomande could potentially be a very good successor to Mohamed Salah – he’s very dynamic, can go both ways, can score goals and very fit. He looks a terrific talent from what I’ve seen of him, so he could potentially be a good replacement.
“I wouldn’t say he’s the perfect replacement though, because you ideally want someone who’s played at the top level before and wouldn’t be fazed by big games, so they can come in and hit the ground running.
“If I was in charge of Liverpool, I would be trying to break the bank for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia; he can play on the right as comfortably as he can on the left and he’s probably the best winger in the world at the moment.
“When a player has been at PSG for a while and won the Champions League twice, maybe the challenge of playing in the Premier League could be exciting. It’s probably unlikely, but if he was to walk through the door, there’d be zero risks attached to him, whereas young players like Diomande could take time.”
Murphy: Iraola unlikely to surpass Slot’s first season
Murphy was enthusiastic about the appointment of manager Andoni Iraola, but played down chances of the Spaniard winning the Premier League next season – a feat famously achieved by Arne Slot in his debut campaign with the Reds.
“I think it would be hard for Iraola to properly challenge for the title in his first season,”Murphy added. “Liverpool still have a wonderful squad, but Iraola will need to integrate new players and a new style, and integrating new players last season was a big problem for Liverpool.
“I think a realistic aim would be for the club to win some silverware and being consistently in the top four, which is probably what Iraola will want too. You don’t want a situation where you’re 10 points off Champions League places halfway through the season – you want to be competitive.”
