Sunderland vs Chelsea – Premier League 2026/27 Match Preview & Betting Tips

Premier League Betting Tips

Struggling Sunderland host Chelsea on Matchday 10 of the Premier League season.

The Black Cats are rooted to the bottom of the table and seem bereft of ideas all over the pitch.

As for Chelsea, the start of the Xabi Alonso era has been mostly positive, aside from the odd questionable performance and result – namely the 2-0 home loss to Tottenham.

But a victory at the Stadium of Light on Sunday just before the November international break would keep the Blues’ quest for Champions League qualification firmly on track.

Sunderland vs Chelsea Preview

Recent results

Sunderland’s last seven Premier League results make for pretty bleak reading. The Black Cats lost five of those games vs Arsenal (0-2), Manchester City (5-3), Brighton (0-2), Bournemouth (2-0) and – most recently – Coventry (3-1), while mustering draws with Brentford (1-1) and Leeds (0-0). Yeah, not great for under-fire manager Regis Le Bris, who also watched his side lose 2-0 at home to Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League on Thursday!

After reeling off consecutive wins over Bournemouth (5-1) and Everton (0-2), Chelsea suffered a mini wobble. A 2-0 defeat to Tottenham at Stamford Bridge was followed by a loss to Liverpool on penalties in the EFL Cup. But Alonso’s side collected a huge 2-0 victory over Manchester United last weekend, with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer back on the scoresheet.

Head-to-head record

Interestingly, Sunderland won three of the last five Premier League games against Chelsea, including 2-1 victories home and away last season.

The Blues won just once from their previous five trips to the Stadium of Light across all competitions.

Team news

Romaine Mundle, Habib Diarra and Daniel Ballard are ruled out for Sunderland with injury, while Omar Aldetere is serving a one-match suspension following his red card at Coventry. Nordi Mukiele and Juan Angulo are doubts.

Reece James, Joao Pedro, Maxcence Lacroix and Jamie Gittens are the long-term absentees for Chelsea, while Emiliano Martinez, Jorrel Hato and Jordan Henderson rate as doubts.

Sunderland vs Chelsea Betting Tips

Draw no bet – Chelsea @ 1.42

Sunderland’s woeful run of form in recent weeks points to one thing and one thing only here – a Chelsea win. But the Blues have been a tad inconsistent on the road this season, losing two of their four Premier League away matches. As such, DNB is perhaps the wiser pick.

Player to score or assist – Morgan Rogers @ 2.00

Rogers scored a sensational solo goal in last weekend’s win over Man Utd, taking him to six key contributions in nine Premier League outings. It is a more-than-solid return from a player capable of winning any match on his own. Rogers also netted on his last appearance vs Sunderland back in April, though that was in the colours of Aston Villa.

Player to score or assist – Cole Palmer @ 1.94

Palmer actually scored on his last visit to the Stadium of Light back in May, but it came in a 2-1 victory for Sunderland – which destroyed Chelsea’s hopes of European qualification. But the positivity levels are far higher in West London now, and Palmer has made a good start to the season with three goals and three assists from nine matches, crucially striking from the penalty spot vs Man Utd. Backing him here at close to evens therefore feels like a very solid pre-match selection.
