The Final Six World Cup Qualifiers

The main headline from the World Cup play-off finals was Italy’s failure to qualify for a third successive tournament.

Gennaro Gattuso’s men drew 1-1 in Bosnia & Herzegovina and then lost on penalties, with Alessandro Bastoni’s first-half red card proving fatal.

Elsewhere, Sweden reached the promised land with a 3-2 victory over Poland, courtesy of a late winner from Viktor Gyokeres, while Turkey secured their spot with a 1-0 win in Kosovo.

Czech Republic also qualified via a penalty shootout after a thrilling 2-2 draw with Denmark, Michael Sadilek converting the winning spot kick.

Outside of Europe, Iraq booked their place at the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Bolivia, while DR Congo continued their journey after beating Jamaica 1-0 in a play-off final.

Let’s see which groups the final six qualifiers have been drawn into…

European champions Spain are the slight favourites for glory, just ahead of England – who La Roja beat 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final.

It is a slight surprise to see Argentina as low as fourth on the list and behind France, given Lionel Scaloni’s magnificent side are the reigning world champions and the holders of the Copa America.

And perhaps the biggest surprise on the list is Norway at 26.00, making them the ‘dark horses’ for the 2026 edition of the World Cup. The Scandinavians were sensational in qualifying, even thrashing Italy 4-1 away from home, and boast a brilliant squad – spearheaded by Martin Odegaard and Erling Haaland. Worth a punt? Maybe!

Some familiar faces here!

Mbappe won the Golden Boot in 2022 with eight goals, one more than Messi.

Kane collected the accolade in 2018 courtesy of six strikes for England, and his ridiculous form in a Bayern Munich shirt this season – combined with the Three Lions’ second-favourite tag – makes him a real standout candidate here.

But we are not too sure about Palmer at 21.00, given the Chelsea star is not a guaranteed starter under Thomas Tuchel!
