What happened in the 2nd ODI?
After a six-wicket defeat in the 1st ODI, England responded brilliantly at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Harry Brook’s side bowled India out for 233 on a decent surface, with Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson each taking three wickets. Shreyas Iyer (66), Virat Kohli (65) and captain Shubman Gill (31) all got starts, but could not convert into big scores – which is rare for this talented India batting lineup.
England got off to a bit of a shocker in the chase. Ben Duckett was dismissed first ball and Jacob Bethell then got out for just four runs. But Joe Root (99*) steadied the ship in masterful fashion with support from Will Jacks (30) and Sam Curran (26), and Atkinson (23*) then hit the winning runs in the 45th over, rather funnily denying Root a century in the process. England’s greatest batter did not care one bit, though!
Team news
England’s team looked far better on Thursday with the extra seam-bowling option, so we expect Liam Dawson to miss out once again. Josh Tongue could come back into the fold, but Atkinson, Archer and Saqib Mahmood performed well as a seam-bowling unit at Sophia Gardens.
Washington Sundar injured his hamstring in Cardiff and is unlikely to feature here, which is a big blow for India given his all-round ability. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana are great replacement options, though, with their brand of pace bowling perhaps suited to what may be a tricky Lord’s surface. KL Rahul missed out in the last match due to illness, but expect him to replace Ishan Kishan in the XI here.
