A fiendishly tricky handicap kicks off Grand National day, as 22 runners and riders tackle three miles around the sharp Mildmay course. As ever, keep an eye on any runners who went to Cheltenham, as that can take the edge off some horses, but we believe <\/span>Jeriko Du Reponet is a good prospect here. He finished an excellent second in the Pertemps Hurdle at the Festival and can go one better here. A danger at a big price could be Timmy Tuesday. This Irish-trained contender has been in good form this season and won<\/span> last time out at Down Royal.<\/span><\/p>\n

1.55pm \u2013 Mersey Novices\u2019 Hurdle (Grade 1) – 2m4f<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

An intriguing contest for this year\u2019s renewal of the Mersey Novices\u2019 Hurdle, featuring some top-class young horses from both sides of the Irish Sea. However, this centres around Nicky Henderson\u2019s Lulamba, who was collared late on in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham. <\/span>He is a hot favourite here and as a four-year-old, gets an all-important weight allowance which makes him banker material. Horaces Pearl is an interesting contender for Fergal O\u2019Brien. He has won both his races this campaign in good style and could give our <\/span>pick most to think about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2.30pm – Freebooter Handicap Chase – 3m1f<\/b><\/h2>\n

Another handicap is upon us, this time over fences as 16 get set to line-up around the Mildmay track. It is a tough jumping test, as the obstacles come thick and fast, so Docpickedme looks a good bet to get home in front. He won really well at Doncaster <\/span>in a Grade 3 at the end of January and has had a nice break since. A big challenger at longer odds might well be Sam Brown. The veteran 13-year-old won in fantastic fashion at Newbury on his last outing and could outrun his odds once again on a course that will <\/span>suit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3.05pm – Liverpool Hurdle (Grade 1) – 3m<\/b><\/h2>\n

This contest is one of the biggest races of the whole meeting, as the best three-milers in the sport do battle following an epic clash at Cheltenham, where Teahupoo narrowly lost his Stayers\u2019 crown to Bob Olinger. He still ran a good race but is out for revenge <\/span>here and there is not a rival in this line-up as good as his nemesis from the Festival, so he looks a good bet to bounce back. In terms of other dangers, stablemate The Wallpark could give Teahupoo the most to think about. He has been in the best form of his <\/span>career this term and should be in contention when others have cried enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4pm \u2013 Grand National (Grade 3) – 4m2f<\/b><\/h2>\n

Whilst the Cheltenham Gold Cup may be the most prestigious race in the National Hunt calendar, the Grand National is unquestionably the most famous. The list of previous winners of this contest is a who\u2019s who of horse racing legends such as Red Rum, Aldaniti <\/span>and Tiger Roll. The big question is; could I Am Maximus do that rare thing of winning this race more than once? He has not been in great form this term and the drying ground may do him no favours, so we are going with Stumptown to keep this prize in Ireland. <\/span>He won the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham in brilliant style and he jumps, stays and travels well, ticking all the boxes for a National winner. At longer odds, Bravemansgame can roll back the years and run a big race. He has been a top-class horse for <\/span>many seasons and although past his prime, this race and unique environment could fit the bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5pm \u2013 Maghull Novices\u2019 Chase (Grade 1) \u2013 2m<\/b><\/h2>\n

Following the thrills and spills of the Grand National, we have a \u201csprint\u201d round the Mildmay in this cracking Grade 1 contest featuring the best two-mile novices chasers. A few of these ran in the Arkle at Cheltenham and it would be no surprise to see Only <\/span>By Night go one better than at the Festival. He ran a great race in defeat behind Jango Baie at big odds and looks set to avenge that narrow loss. The biggest threat could be Kalif Du Berlais. Paul Nicholls\u2019 charge swerved a tilt at the Festival for this and <\/span>can run a big race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5.35pm – Weatherbys National Hunt Flat Race (Grade 2) \u2013 2m1f<\/b><\/h2>\n

The final race of this year\u2019s Grand National Festival is a competitive bumper and there are some horses in here who could definitely go onto bigger and better things in their careers. As ever, Ireland has a strong hand in the bumper category and this could <\/span>go to Le Labo. Joseph O\u2019Brien\u2019s horse won his only start in convincing fashion at Thurles and can beat off the challenge of El Cairos, who finished fifth in the Champion Bumper at the Festival.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
