Athletes\u2019 pay was once again a hot media topic this week, with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn proposing a cap on earnings,\u00a0and\u00a0Carlos Tevez signing a mouth-watering deal with the Chinese Super League just before\u00a0it put a three-a-team cap on foreign players.<\/p>\n

As always, the debate focuses on male players\u2019\u00a0cash, from football\u00a0and boxing to\u00a0baseball and\u00a0basketball. But what about the girls?<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s true that male athletes\u00a0earn much more than\u00a0females, mostly due to the fact that most big\u00a0professional sports – tennis\u00a0apart – are male dominated,\u00a0several of their female counterparts aren\u2019t lagging too far behind.<\/p>\n

Forbes has listed the the highest-earning female athletes in 2016, based on salary, prize money, endorsements, media appearances and licensing – and these girls are really bringing home the bacon.<\/p>\n

Serena Williams<\/h2>\n

Total Earnings $28.9 million<\/p>\n

Prize money: $8.9 million<\/p>\n

Endorsements: $20 million<\/p>\n

Topping the list is tennis\u2019 tour de force, Williams. With 3 Grand Slam titles under her belt in 2015 alone, the 34 year old is still widely considered to be the most dominant player in women\u2019s tennis. She had a particularly fruitful year thanks largely to a massive $20 million earned in endorsements for a range of multinationals\u00a0including Nike, Pepsi and J.P Morgan Chase.<\/p>\n
