The Academy announced their nominees for the 2019 Oscars a few days ago and, just like every year, it has everyone talking. Again, this award show is dogged by controversy like fired hosts and disgraced directors, but mostly people seem to be smiling because stories about women and people of colour are dominating the top categories. A conspicuous absentee is Mary Queen of Scots<\/em>, a recent release with a lot of hype, perfect Oscar bait, with only a Best Costume nomination for the historical drama. The Destroyer<\/em>, a vehicle for Nicole Kidman\u2019s acting range, also surprised many with no nods this year. Maybe they were released just a little too close to the start of Awards season.<\/p>\n

While that\u2019s the surprise snubs this year, the frontrunners are also being hotly discussed. The favourites, according to NetBet and the critics, are Roma<\/em> and Green Book<\/em> for Best Picture, with The Favourite<\/em>, A Star Is Born<\/em>, and Vice<\/em> also doing well across the top categories. The Favourite<\/em>, while it may not sweep the awards with wins this year, is notable for a staggering ten nominations and all three of the lead actresses receiving nominations across two categories.<\/p>\n

You may want to plump for who we think are going to be the winners on 25th February\u2026 but then again\u2026 it\u2019s not a guarantee. Last year might be a testament to the predictability of the Academy (read last year\u2019s blog<\/a> and see that every single one of our predictions came true) but the memory of the Moonlight<\/em>\/La La Land<\/em> mix-up from two years ago is still very fresh. No one doubted the mistakenly announced La La Land<\/em> to the point that two acceptance speeches were made, that\u2019s how sure we were they would win Best Picture. So, go with your gut. Or don\u2019t. Who knows what the Academy are thinking?!<\/p>\n
