Wayne Rooney’s England career in numbers

Wayne Rooney called time on his England career yesterday, the night before the next England squad was due to be announced.

He’s the last from England’s so-called “Golden Generation” to retire from international duty, and we’ve looked at some of the numbers behind his meteoric international career.

Rooney received two red cards during his international career. The first came against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup, while the second came in a qualifier for Euro 2012 against Montenegro, which saw him banned for the opening two games of the tournament.

Rooney has played in six major tournaments for England. It would have been seven had they qualified for Euro 2008.

Rooney played under six England managers: Sven-Goran Eriksson, Steve McClaren, Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson, Sam Allardyce and Gareth Southgate.

Rooney may be England’s record goalscorer, but he scored just seven goals at the final stages of international tournaments, with four of them coming as an 18-year old at Euro 2004.

Rooney led out England as captain 22 times, while there were seven other occasions when he wore the captain’s armband during an international game.

Sir Bobby Charlton’s England goalscoring record stood for 45 years until Rooney beat it in 2015.

Rooney won 71 of his 119 England appearances, with 29 draws and 19 defeats.

Rooney now holds the record for most appearances by an outfield player for England. He’s six short of Peter Shilton’s overall record of 125.
