Chelsea vs Liverpool Football Preview

Thomas Tuchel has re-established Stamford Bridge as a fortress since taking control of Chelsea. The Blues have lost just once in 15 games on home soil this season, keeping clean sheets in six of those victories. It is defensive solidity which Tuchel has looked to build Chelsea’s success on, and they will need to be on top form if they are to keep this rampant Liverpool side at bay.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have put together a fine run of form towards the back-end of 2021, and a win for the Reds could put some distance between themselves and Chelsea. Diogo Jota has emerged as a key figure in Klopp’s side and he is keeping Brazilian Roberto Firmino out of the team with his impressive number of goal contributions.

This game could be dictated by a potential early goal. We are likely to see Chelsea’s back five defend deep and allow Liverpool the majority of possession. If the visitors can break the deadlock early, Tuchel’s side will be forced into playing more expansive football, and this could lead to a high tempo, end to end game.

Set pieces could also play a major role in deciding the outcome of this match. Chelsea have been lethal from corners this season and Antonio Rudiger is always a threat. However, Liverpool will fancy their own chances of finding the net with a header. Jota has proven his ability in the air, despite not being the tallest of forwards.

We’re not convinced Chelsea will be able to stop this Liverpool team from finding the net, but we do think they will have some success of their own from wide areas. We’ve picked out some of the best looking bets ahead of this marquee match-up in the New Year.

Chelsea vs Liverpool Betting Tips

Both to Score and Tie

There will be plenty of attacking talent on show in this game. Liverpool have the two leading goalscorers in the league with Mo Salah and Jota – the pair have 25 goals between them. But Chelsea are dangerous in their own right. Mason Mount has been back amongst the goals and their wing-backs don’t need a second invitation to sneak into the box. It’s a fairly even tie on paper.

Under 2.5 Goals

We expect Chelsea to defend deep, and although Liverpool have been scoring goals for fun, Tuchel’s side have been efficient at the back. Games between these two tend to be relatively low-scoring games, and we expect a similar outcome in this one.

First Goalscorer – Diogo Jota

The Portuguese forward is in inspired form. Not only is he a dangerous poacher with both feet in the box, but his attacking positioning is also elite and his aerial prowess is impressive. We can see him breaking the deadlock.
