Pep Guardiola’s side host United this weekend having lost three of their last four meetings with the Reds at the Etihad. In fact, they have somewhat surprisingly won just twice in their last eight home games against their neighbours. Erik ten Hag’s side have been much improved since back-to-back defeats to open their campaign. Wins over Liverpool and Arsenal were particularly impressive and may highlight exactly how they plan to cause City problems. The visitors have found most success in the transition for a number of years, with pace on the counter an ideal way to approach the Manchester derby.
We saw City struggle and concede three when Newcastle attacked them directly and physically – that game at St. James’ Park is seemingly a blueprint for how United can find success in this match. But for all of their perceived vulnerability on the break, City have a way of beating teams into submission via endless passages of possession. The United back four might have improved on the frail defence of last season, but they are yet to face a combination of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland.
