As it did in Europe, Golf began to thrive in the USA as well. The United States Golf Association (USGA) was founded in 1894 to regulate the sport in the USA. By 1910, more than 1000 golf clubs had emerged across the States.
The current governing body of Golf in the States, the Professional Golf Association of America (PGA), was founded in 1916. This organisation sponsored the nation’s first professional championship at Siwanoy Country Club in New York the same year. It has been held every year since, except for 1917, 1919, and 1943 due to World War I and II.
