Manchester City vs Newcastle Football Preview

Newcastle’s attention will turn to the Premier League after suffering Carabao Cup final defeat at the hands of Manchester United. Not only will they have to put Wembley disappointment behind them, but the Magpies will also have to put an end to their four-match winless run in the league if they are to avoid falling further adrift of the Champions League spots.

Champions Manchester City stand in their way. Every game is a must-win if Pep Guardiola’s side are to keep the pressure on league leaders Arsenal. They prepare to host Newcastle having lost just once in their last 10 in all competitions, with their recent home record something to behold. Since Brentford’s shock pre-World Cup victory at the Etihad, City have won seven of their eight home games, a run that includes wins over Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal.

The Etihad has not been particularly kind to Newcastle in the Premier League era. The Magpies have not won a league game away at City since a visit to Maine Road in 2000. The hosts have won 12 consecutive home matches against Eddie Howe’s side, scoring four or more goals in 50% of those, including 5-0 victories in two of the last three.

Premier League Football Odds

Perhaps unsurprisingly, City are heavy 1.41 favourites, with Newcastle 6.50 underdogs after a blip in form. It was a 3-3 draw when these two met earlier this campaign, with a tie this weekend priced at 4.80.

Both teams to score is at 1.86, with either side to keep a clean sheet at 1.88. This fixture has typically promised goals – over 2.5 (1.66), over 3.5 (2.62) and over 4.5 (4.75) have all been winning bets in the past. League top scorer Erling Haaland (3.20) is leading the odds to break the deadlock, followed by City’s Julian Alvarez (4.50) and Riyad Mahrez (7.40). Callum Wilson (9.60) is favourite to open the scoring for the Magpies.

Manchester City vs Newcastle Betting Tips

Man City to win to nil – 2.37

City have won three of their last five home matches to nil, as well as keeping a clean sheet in five of their previous seven meetings with Newcastle. Howe’s side are also struggling for form – they have failed to score in back-to-back games and have not scored multiple goals in a Premier League game since Boxing Day.

Phil Foden anytime goalscorer – 3.28

Guardiola goes through phases of favouring certain players. Phil Foden is amidst his second purple patch of the season, scoring three goals in his past two appearances. The 22-year-old looks to have nailed down a spot in the side and could be crucial in this weekend’s clash with the Magpies.
