The Open Championship Preview

Among those leading the charge to glory will be reigning champion Cameron Smith, who became only the fifth Australian to win The Open last year at St. Andrews. The 29-year-old has impressed on the LIV Golf tour this year registering five top 10 finishes and a win at the London Invitational earlier this month. Smith has also been fairly consistent in majors, finishing T9 in the PGA and fourth at the U.S. Open.

The favourite to snatch Smith’s crown is world number two and 2014 Open champion Rory McIlroy. Question marks surrounded the 34-year-old after he missed the cut at both The Players Championship and the Masters. But McIlroy is back with a vengeance. He has since finished T7 at the PGA, second at the U.S. Open, and most recently secured victory in the Genesis Scottish Open. He is back to his best, and it’s probably worth noting, his 2014 Open Championship win came at this very golf course.

Tailing McIlroy closely in the odds are world number one Scottie Scheffler and Masters champion Jon Rahm. The former is operating with a near-unprecedented level of consistency. He has made seven consecutive top five finishes prior to this week’s major, not to mention a top 10 finish at every major this year.

Rahm hasn’t quite been able to maintain the performance levels that resulted in his green jacket triumph, but he is among the very best on his day and has shown some promising recent performances. He finished T10 at the U.S. Open, and his T3 finish at this competition in 2021 cannot be overlooked.

In what looks like an extremely competitive field, there will be plenty of money outside these favourites. Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood, Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler have all been attracting attention ahead of what promises to be a thrilling four days of golf in the north west.

The Open Championship Betting Tips

Rory McIlroy to win The Open – 7.80

If there was ever a time to back McIlroy, it’s right now. He was exceptional at the recent Scottish Open and performs with a scary level of consistency at majors. You really cannot ignore the fact he has finished in the top 10 at six of the previous seven majors. What’s more, he knows this course as well as anyone in the field having shot 66-66-68-71 to win at -17 in 2014.

Scottie Scheffler Top 5 Finish – 8.50

The world number one is another player at the peak of his powers who should be under real consideration. The American has made 10 top five finishes in 15 outings in 2023, including a T2 at the PGA Championship and a third-place finish at the U.S. Open. No matter who leads the field following the cut, there’s a pretty good chance Scheffler is within a shot or two.

Shane Lowry E/W – 25.00

With some questionable weather lingering in the north, the conditions could suit Shane Lowry to a tee. He hasn’t set the world alight this year but has been quietly going about his business, consistently registering top 20 finishes. With an Open Championship victory already to his name and some wind on the horizon, he could be a great outside shot each-way.
